Is there a clear favorite when choosing one? I'm dissapointed in my $16 choice, went south quickly. By the end of my week in Canada, a pair of elcheapo wire cutters were doing a much better job. Please chime in...

The ONLY cutters to get are Knipex. there is not a hook yet that I have not been able to cut with them. They are more Money but well worth the price. Mine are 7 years old and still going strong. even use them around the house for certain projects.

Like humanely releasing the poor dog/kids after practicing your DDD retrieve in the bathtub?

Knipex as mentioned before are the ones to have. Just put a lanyard on them so if you drop them they are still attached to your hand....

They run around $40 but are well worth it, and unless you keep them in your livewell they will last you many many years.

Easiest place to order these is through ESOX ANGLER magazine, either via the mail form or call the office and talk to Trisha, she will ship them out within one week.

One more suggestion, if you are only going to have one pair, my recommendation is to have the ones that look like regular side cutters, not the mini-bolt cutter. The reason being is that this model is a little narrower/thin profile than the mini-bolt cutter version. This will allow you to get the tool down into the fishes mouth if necessary, or if you have to come from the back side through the gill plate, it will fit much easier. Don't worry...this model will cut hooks like butter, just like the mini-bolt cutter version.

Finlander,

The Knipex bolt cutters are the ONLY way to go.
I have used many different kinds and they are truely the best.
You can cut 2X strong hooks with one hand. They are worth every penny.

KNIPEX!!!

I got mine from Capt. Larry, I'm pretty sure he still sells them and if I remember right there $42 including shipping. You can get his email address off his profile right here.

You can also order them through EA magazine - they sell both the straight and compound models. Keep them oiled, and put a lanyard on them. They put any other cutter I have ever tried to shame. They will mince through BIG trebles (9/0 and 10/0) with one hand, and they will last for years if you take care of them.

Ok, the jury has decided. Now what about cutting VMC 4x heavy duty hooks? That's another question. Short hooks or standards?? Thanks all.

Ditto on Knipex. You can get them for about $32.00 at Berlands House of Tools.

Tip for people who are cheap:
Bay search for Knipex 8" bolt cutters.
I got mine for about $10 plus $4 shipping.
They are good as new, and much better than any other cutters I tried (all the cheap brands).

Good luck,
Papa

Oops, that should say eBay.
Keep your eyes peeled for other Papa Joe listings on how to be cheap when it comes to gear.
