| I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem that happened after I dismantled my C3's for cleaning. I removed the side plate to clean the levelwind gear. When I reassembled the reel I get a grinding noise if I reel quickly then stop. When I stop the levelwind gear seems to still turn, it is like the plastic gear cog gear is not messing properly with the idle gear. Do you who what is causing this and how it can be fixed? Thanks in advance Mike | |||

Posts: 346 | Check those two little white plastic pieces on the ends of the spring clip (side of spool). If they are too far out (away from the center of the spring clip), they will easily get crushed. Hope this helps, MJB

This can be done from outside the reel. Just remove the single big screw from the bottom side of the level wind. The pawl is the only major wear item on an ABU and they almost all take the same one. I keep a couple in my box for this reason and they are easy to replace on the boat. Here is an excellent ABU Ambassadeur site with tons of info.. http://freespace.virgin.net/dave.lumb/amb01/01index.html Bookmark it and read it when you have time (like over the winter). Not now, it is Musky season.

Posts: 358 Location: London, England | Don't reel quicly then stop, as Tommy Cooper might have said! What you're describing happens to all ABUs if you reel fast and stop when the reel isn't winding anything in. Basically it's just overrunning when you stop winding and it caused the level wind gears to slip . It sounds like you've put the reel together correctly so don't worry about it, but stop with the fast reeling and stopping or else you could damage the plastic level wind gears!

Posts: 131 Location: Kalamazoo, MI | As others have said, stop doing that. If you continue to do it, you will cause damage. What it is, is the pinion gear slipping on the clutch washer. It should never occur under normal usage, but if you continue to do it, you will prematurely wear out either your pinion gear, or the clutch washer, or both.
