I'm thinking of trying to make my own wood lures. Does anyone know on lures like suick thrillers and reef hawg a is the wood sealed or is it just painted. I'm looking for a simple system yo do at home thick epoxy finished lures are great but I want to keep it simple.

All wood baits should be sealed before painting. Seal, prime, paint, then clear coat.

There is no way that Suicks are sealed----those things soak up water like crazy--and that's sometimes what makes a certain suick work better than another. I have amny that look trashed--- but when wet and used for awhile--they seem to work better---nice slow rise---Great in the Fall.

If your baits aren't sealed the wood will swell when, not if, it gets wet. This will, or can make your paint/finish bubble and eventually flake off. I learned the hard way...
However, like esox911 said, some baits will work better with a little water soaked into them... They might look "ugly" but if fish eat them who cares how they look?!?
