I have a 400d that won't engage, the handle just spins. Any idea what part(s) need replaced?

Try pressing the thumb bar all the way down and then turn the handle again

have you had it opened up recently? if you screw it back together and have the thumb bar down when you screw it back together it will not engage, must keep the thumb bar up while screwing it back together.

That's how it is for B's and TE's, but the D is different.

I'd like him to try my suggestion above first and then we can diagnose. Because it's highly unlikely that it would spin and make no noise - that's why I think it's just "partially cocked" if you will. I doubt there are any pieces broken or missing unless indeed you have had it apart and missed something putting it back together, and this happened right from the gitgo

Try and open up reel and push in on the pinion gear to see if it is free and not hung up. Also ck to make sure the spool pin has not fallen out.
Hope that helps.

No matter what you say as a way to correct this problem, it is a horrible design. There is seldom or never a complaint about a Shimano....just sayin

Any insight on how to fix this? I have been searching for spool pins and all I can find is the tool to remove them
