What is the difference between the old convectors and the new ones? I have heard the old ones were better.

I have some about 6-8 years old and some from last year and they all seem the to work great. I have 5 of them and zero issues. Good reels.

I have a few that are 10 years old and a 2 that are about 3 years old. To me its the drag, the older models have super smooth drags that are easily adjusted. The newer ones tend to stick and need to be loosened way up and re tightened down to make any small looser adjustment. It may help to put different drag washers in but I haven't tried that route yet. My 2 cents..

I purchased three new ones this year and all of them worked flawlessly even in freezing conditions. Was very happy with their performance and plan on purchasing more in the future. From my experience Okuma offers great products at excellent price points. I'm sure the Shimano Tekotas are better reels but the Convectors haven't left me wanting any more reel. I know several people who own newer Convectors that put a lot more strain on their equipment than I do and I really haven't heard a complaint from them either.

Joel is correct on the drags. My originals are 10 years old and still going. Replaced the drafs a few times thru those years. The new ones all that you need to do is replace the drags. I had a problem with mine dribbling out line when trolling and had to tighten them down so they wouldnt. I replaced the washers and problem solved. Very easy to do. Theres even a picture by picture online to follow

I asked an Okuma rep the other day about this question and he said to his knowledge there was no difference between the old and new. I was hoping he would chime in here. Give one a try, you won't be disappointed.
