I have a mind set that big baits produce bigger fish in the fall months when trolling. My best fish seem to follow this pattern but I would like to hear what others think.

I would agree with that. I have always thought that in the fall my biggest fish, of any species, have come on trolling bigger cranks. Fish put on the feedbag in the fall. Water is cold, and they want more bang for their buck in regards to an easy meal that wont require using a ton of energy. Does not mean small lures will not work though!

As I always say, if you limit yourself to one way, one size or one method, you limit your chances to catch fish...I do agree that bigger baits tend to do better in the fall, but I have caught some of my biggest fall fish on my smallest baits...I always try to mix it up, even in the fall or until I find a pattern.

ShutUpNFish nailed squarely on the head! You can always catch a large fish with a small lure, but your chances of catching a smaller fish on a large lure are greatly diminished.

I talked with an expert about this same subject about 15 years ago...Mr Doug Johnson, He said, he catches just as big of fish on 10" baits, as you do on 14" baits. I would think after 30-40 plus years guiding Canadian waters, He would know!!!

Thanks for the reply's. I spent 10 days on LOWs fishing 10 & 12 inch baits the whole time while my pard kept with 7 to 8 inch cranks. I did get bigger fish (44 the best) but only 4 in a total of 12 in the boat.. I had 2 monster bites but didn't get the hooks in. Also had 2 others on that I guessed were in the mid 40,s . Any way my reasoning was to get my first 50 incher. Not this time----again. Keep fishing!!
