You DO need a passport if you're going to fish on the Canadian side----- if you launch on the US side and travel into Canadian waters---you must call Canadian customs and DECLARE yourself---whereby THEY will ask you SEVERAL questions regarding your trip( personal info----boat info---etc). If you anchor or make landfall on the Canadian side ---for ANY reason----during the course of that day----you must contact US customs upon returning to once again--clear customs. The Canadian customs will give you a report number---that you give to the Border Patrol if you are detained---and they will call it in to see if everything checks out. You must have your info---your boat registration----- the E99 form for the boat----- all emergency equipment----last time I heard flare GUNS were not allowed---but I'm not 100 percent sure about that one. Make sure your boat is in GOOD working order----your lights----horn-----bilge pumps------MUST BE OPERATIONAL! Have your pfd's---throw cushions----fire extinguisher handy as well. Good luck out there-----it's an AWESOME fishery!!!!-----Pat

People are not doing most of the but if you get stopped you better have. I just fish one side or the other when I go.

That all depends on which side you are launching from & which side you'll be fishing. A lot of guys as well as guides don't call in to Canada Border Services either because they're not allowed in Canada because of DUI's, drug offenses etc. or because they don't want to waste time. The past 2 years they have been stopping a lot of guys on the water to verify that they called in etc. The Canadian Border Services officers have been riding with the U.S. Coast Guard when they are stopping guys. Most guys that are stopped are those fishing the upper Detroit River.

True Zib in the last part. I was checked this summer in the middle of the lake. 3 US agents and 3 Canadian on the same US based vessel. They can go anywhere now.
