Location: Pewaukee, WI | I was a big fan of the calcutta and at the end of last year switched to the morrum. The morrum has been a much more comfortable reel to cast all day for me. One of the biggest reasons i switched was the metal construction. Shimano use so much more plastic....personally I can really feel the difference ..... They are both quality reels and if taken care of properly will last a lifetime.......the morrum seems a bit more solid though. Tight lines Jim

Posts: 69 Location: Just above the thermoclime | I have both and prefer the Calcutta. It has a better feel in my hand. The one complaint I have about the Morrum is that the level wind does not move on the cast, only on the uptake. I feel this can add unneeded drag to the line esp. if the guide is all the way to one side. Otherwise it's a toss up. You can't go wrong with either.

Posts: 358 | No more Shimano products. I have two Calcuttas, and one of them needed repair within the first year I owned it. The Abu's have been on the rods since day one, and none of them have ever gone back for any service of any type.

Posts: 1937 Location: Black Creek, WI | I have several of each. Shimano has been the most consistent in initial quality and durablity. Quite frankly, the Morrum has been nothing but trouble for me. The first three Morrums that I purchased were broken right in the box!!! First one the pinion gear was broken and the second two came with broken thumbars. Gotta say, that soured me with ABU considering that the Morrum is their "elite" product. And don't get me started about the whimpy ABU handles. Both reels are very nice and complement one another nicely with the different gear ratios (that's why I use them both). If you get one that works (and I'm sure someone has a similar story as mine but in favor of the ABU) I still feel that the Calcutta is a better investment over the Morrum.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I have both and like the morrum better. I've had nothing but trouble with my calcutta 400's and 250's, but that is just me. my buddy Chuck Schauer has more hours on a couple 250's than I'd like to imagine without any trouble. I had a bit of thumbar trouble with my morrum, but thats about it. I really like the 5600.
I feel both however are overpriced, and I like my uc 5600(which are a hundred bucks cheaper) better than either.

Location: Illinois-Indiana | I have three calcutta 400's and was thinking about checking out the Morrums, thought I might be missing something.

The 6500 Morrum has the line guide that moves on both the cast and the wind. The smaller Morrum does not on the cast. I'm dying to try one out.

Posts: 1185 Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I had 4 gruelling seasons on my Calcutta and it wasn't as smooth as a new one I got, so I sent it in to the factory. I wrote that I really liked the real and I just wanted it gone through to get it back in shape. I had the real back in less then a week all rebuilt and the invoice said no charge. Now that is customer service! Shimano has a plan where our club can buy 5 items at reduced pricing. So they are willing to help out the fishing organizations. Abu sent me a response to my letter inquiring about helping our club, which said they have enough programs they support already. I wasn't asking for anything more then good pricing on a small package deal. I am very displeased with this, after all it would be nothing more then selling to us at wholesale pricing.
