Subject: Lake Wissota Predictions

Lake Wissota has traditionally been a difficult lake to fish and with the disaster that was the bassmaster tourney a few years back just curious how many fish total the best musky fishermen on the planet can put in the boat on this lake. I guarantee you will not see the numbers or size of the fish caught on Vermilion last weekend. I hope to God she produces fish that weekend.

I voted over 30. I forget how many teams compete, but Wissota has a lot of fish! Maybe it has changed in the last 7 or 8 years, but I used to do ok out there, and the mid September time frame the PMTT will be out there is an awesome time to fish that lake.

I would be floored if the size compared to that at Vermilion, but I would expect a good number of fish to be caught. Bucktails and topwater at that time of year on the shallow bars out there - had some good days. If they get lucky enough to have a cloudy day and slight drizzle watch for big numbers!

I'm planning to go down and cruise the lake and watch how the pros do.

With 35 teams and two days to fish at the end of September, I feel comfortable saying that more than 30 fish will be caught. Then again, they are muskies...

you don't think will compare to Vermillion, wow bold statement. How many records did the pmtt break there in that tournament. Wissota is a decent lake, I fish it several times per week. Guys will catch fish, especially in September. I would be shocked to see more than 25 fish caught though. There are a good number or upper 30s and low 40s in it. I have seen and caught upper 40s. I think its exciting to see it on Wissota, I want to see how the "best" fishermen in the world can figure out a fairly tough lake, lets face it, anyone can go to vermilion and catch fish right now, that's a factory.

Im assuming you have recently been to Vermilion and caught fish? I fished the V while the tournament was going on and I didn't boat a fish. Over 100 teams fished that tourney and only 44 teams caught fish so I wouldn't say Vermilion is that easy.

I think only 50 bass were caught in a 4 or 3 day tournament. See link below.

Totals
Day #Limits #Fish Weight
1 1 71 142-05
2 2 53 103-15
3 0 21 39-04
----------------------------------
3 145 285-08

Here are the results from 2005 bass event of wissota. It was not a very good tournament, but obviously has nothing to do with musky fishing or how the pmtt championship will go. As a fisherman and a spectator I love watching to see if the best can figure out harder bodies of water. I was on big V about a week prior to the tournament, caught 4, saw a pile. I didn't boat anything over 46, but moved some hogs. When almost half of the field catches a musky (79 fish caught) not many bodies of water that can compare.

I'm not trying to be smart, but how many consider Wissota a tough lake? I used to struggle out there when the water was hot in mid summer, probably because at the time I didn't try fishing deeper water.

When they were shallower, I'd never say it was easy to catch fish, but usually we did ok, especially earlier in the fall.

I liked Wissota for the decent (not a TON, but not what I felt was low density either) numbers of fish it has, and there were a small handful of pretty nice fish in there. The mid 30 to low 40 inchers were by far the most common though.

Has anybody caught much of the Leech Lake Strain they stocked there several years ago? They must be reaching a somewhat decent size now?

It will be pretty interesting to see how the top teams do out there, and what kind of patterns they put together.

Hopefully those fishing the tournament will let us know how many leechers are caught. If those fish made it to adulthood that lake could produce some giants in the future.

Everybody going knows how to catch fish in a variety of conditions. They will take advantage of what the lake has to offer in the condition it is in on game day. Over 30. For sure!! Best of luck to you boys!! ...

Little Wissota is off limits, that takes out a nice chunk of good water.

Id imagine thats because of the bridge and not everyone being able to get under it?

Looks like a couple of guys nailed the prediction.
Is this just chalked up to "that's Muskie fishing", or is this just a terrible fishery to have a major tournament on? I am not sure why every championship isn't held in MN.

Nine total fish caught - six on Saturday and three on Sunday. Water was warm at mostly 68 deg with warm air temps. Algae bloom bad. South wind made for green water in the north end of the lake. I think more fish would have been caught if the water had been in the low 60's. Wissota is a much better lake than the tournament results showed.

Lake Wissota is not a great lake but it is better than it showed this weekend. From my experience a warming trend and an algae bloom in the fall is about the worst fishing conditions you can ask for. I have only caught one Leech lake strain on Wissota. About 3-4 years ago it was 31 inches long and VERY skinny.

That is an absolutely stunningly good total. Vermilion was on fire that weekend. Not a good idea to judge any water by a weekend tournament total catch, unless you want to be wrong allot.
