| Hey All,
After offering yet another pair of clip on polarized glasses to the Muskie gods last week, I've decided to bite the bullet and cough up some $$ for a pair of prescription polarized sunglasses.
I am fishing mostly clear lakes with a little green tint early daylight and evening hours but also some bright daylight.
I was wondering what would be the best mirror/tint combo and if anyone likes a particular brand..

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Can't speak specifically to "mirror/tint combo" thoughts, but I wear Bolle prescription sunglasses. With the options for no-scratch, polarized, etc. etc., they're a bit expensive ($425). BUT, I wear them to play sand volleyball too and this pair as well the one I had before me (only had to replace them because they were stolen out of my truck. jokes on you, f*ckball, they're prescription!) and they are tough as can be. They rarely come off, and when they do, no damage. I've had them fly off and been kicked, been hit in the face with a ball (yes, the ball goes fast) and no damage.

| Well, I just went through this. A lot could depend on your Rx. I have a pretty bad astigmatism, and Smith Optics and Costa del Mar could NOT do my Rx due to the wrap around nature of their frames. I was recommended Maui Jim, but I don't care for the way they look...they look like Ray-bans, like I should be back in 1986 starring in Top Gun. 
I had used Ocean Waves for the last 6 years, but they went out of business. However, I saw they re-opened earlier this year under new ownership. On a lark, I called them and was connected to their new Rx department and they can handle my Rx. They don't have the full array of frames and lens/coating options (yet) that they used to have but they expect it all to come "online" over the next year.
As far as lens colors and options, in clear to lightly stained water, I always had used the amber lens with the green mirror. For low light conditions, I had a pair their Illuminators, which were a yellow lens with a very light pink mirror. Those are what I used for years and they were great. However, talking to Ocean Waves this year, the Rx person recommended trying a grey lens with a blue mirror. So I have those coming next week. They don't have the Illuminators back yet, but she said they will have them early next year. However, she was able to sell me on a "Level 1" Amber lens with a rose coloring she is making custom for low light. Evidently, a regular Amber lens is Level 3 or Level 4...I don't know what any of this means other than she said a Level 1 Amber would only be about 5% darker than the old Illuminator lens.

Location: minocqua, wi. | had the same situation so brought frames to my friend who owns Minocqua Optical and she made the lenses for me. transitional and big astigmatism too. she nailed it and it was much less than what it would have cost me with Rayban and/or Costa or any of the others. like other businesses there are smoke and mirrors in the lens supply game and there are more ways than one to skin a cat! if anyone is looking, take the time to stop in next time north and talk to Margarette. she can make it happen! they are located on the right right at the HWY 51 and HWY 70W intersection just northeast of McDonalds in Minocqua. |

had the same situation so brought frames to my friend who owns Minocqua Optical and she made the lenses for me. transitional and big astigmatism too. she nailed it and it was much less than what it would have cost me with Rayban and/or Costa or any of the others. like other businesses there are smoke and mirrors in the lens supply game and there are more ways than one to skin a cat! if anyone is looking, take the time to stop in next time north and talk to Margarette. she can make it happen! they are located on the right right at the HWY 51 and HWY 70W intersection just northeast of McDonalds in Minocqua.
I completely agree with you re the smoke and mirrors with lenses. And my insurance company was no better, playing games trying to get me to use some sort of poly generic thing through one of their dealers.
I had resigned myself to using my older Rx glasses until I called Ocean Waves. The woman in their RX department is basically doing what your local person did and making some custom lenses for me. Additionally, since i had some flex $ to spend, she also convinced me on the 2nd pair (the lighter amber ones I mentioned) and then cut a deal for getting too. It was super reasonable.
At the end of the day, I don't like the bait n switch and "weird stories" i was getting form everyone else. Having personalized service like you received, or which i received at the new Ocean Waves company, is the way to go for sure. At the end of the day, getting it right is what matters.

| Thanks guys,
Going for a Tan/Green mirror or Gray w/ blue , hoping my Eye DR. Has something good, otherwise I may just have to order online.

Location: Yahara River Chain | Last year, I went to Sam's, but they didn’t have frames I like. So I bought a pair that I liked at Wal-Mart and took them to Sam's to fill the Rx. I had them do grey with blue mirrored. The frames cost $45, lenses $75 and mirroring $65. I also had a pair of Rx in amber for low light and rainy days that I got a few year ago. Can’t tell if they are the best because I am legally blind with Retinitis Pigmentosa. |
