Will be heading to Minnesota next Thursday for 4 days and cant decide if I should fish lacs or leech. Anyone recently fish either of the two or which would you fish if you were going up there? Thanks!

You'll probably have Mille Lacs to yourself if you go that route.

Are people still having issues with Musky on Mille Lacs? I don't understand how it went from one of the best musky fisheries to absolute crap in a matter of a couple years. Used to fish for musky on mille lacs as a kid and had very good luck.

This is simply a guess but I would think some of the old fish are starting to die off, look at all the tanks that were caught in the past few years that were toward the end of there life span, add in some miss handling and a few of the launch's from last year that were targeting pike and skies and those numbers go down. Is there any data to show how much natural reproduction happens on Mille Lacs for skies, I know the metro is almost none wasn't sure if its much better up there or not. If there is little natural reproduction happening that doesn't help either.

The Muskies are still there in Mille Lacs and they still eat. We have had very good luck up there the past few years, but then we don't fish like we used to either. The biggest thing is that the fish have changed their patterns and are no longer congregating in such numbers in places like the north end like they once did. You can still see a few up there, but the schools of a dozen Muskies swimming together are rare now. The zebra mussles have also caused the lake to get much clearer and that has meant deeper weed growth and in areas where Muskie fishermen have not fished historically. There are still Muskies and big PIke in the classic weeded bays and on the rocks, but they tend to be deeper now and usually need to be dug out of there. It seems to take a deeper and more patient approach to find them now.

If you go to Mille Lacs, I'd recommend changing from bucktails and topwaters to deep running spinner baits, such as big Rad Dogs or Grinders. Let the spiinner baits drop down to the top of the deep weeds and drive it right through the tops of those weeds. When your lure catches onto a weed, pull the rod straight back towards you and hang on because that is when the fish will often hit. If you aren't tapping weeds every now and then, you probably won't catch much. Speed up towards the boat and do at least one or two big figure-8s. We've also had our best luck with natural colors such as white/silver, black/silver, copper/brown and yellow/brass. Black hair and Chartruese blades has been good early and late in the day too. And keep those hooks sharp, drag tight and set the hook hard or you'll go home wondering what that could have been.

Good luck.
