Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I have to imagine some people on here have done this at one time or another..( Dan? Doug? Justin?) I understand the risks ( weather and wind), but assuming stuff looks stable.. a) where is the best place to launch to get up there? b) where would you draw the line on wind MPH for safety? I really want to keep my boat off that road if possible...as far as " the road is not that bad", well my last 2 boats say that road is bad enough on equipment....

Posts: 197 Location: N Illinois | Boating in from Morson should offer more protection from the wind. About a 50 minute boat ride.

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I've boated into Sabaskosing from Morson before...I considered that, but I think that would just add on to the overall travel time.

Posts: 153 | I would second guess trailering down the dirt road as well. The Canadians added a bunch of gravel. I don't even like to drive my truck or company car down that road. But that being said, it's not hard to boat from Warroad. But if you are on a schedule meaning arriving and returning on specific dates, that's a big role of the dice. You could be stranded at the Angle for several days. That happened to the guys that bought my Triton last year. They came up from Baudette to fish around Garden Island. Wind and storm came up and they were stranded someplace in Oak Island for five days. The UPS guy took them back to Baudette..down the road. The big lake is just that, and too me anything over 15 mph, in any direction, would make me think twice. Unless I was in a launch. I have done the trip several times, and it's cool. Don't know many places to launch except for Springsteel Resort. If I was that concerned about damage to the boat, I would go stay in the Morson area. Or boat from there as previously suggested. But I have been trapped in Morson several times due to a strong west wind. Edited by Dan Klis 7/13/2015 1:44 PM

Posts: 2045 | I wouldn't do it Brian, even when you get down by little Oak the lake can really start to roll... If you just got a new boat I'd make sure you have a rock deflector, and plan on driving the last 30 miles of gravel at 30-40 mph ..hard to do when you want to get there and fish..but that's what you should do IMO , ... as Dan mentioned even if you get lucky on your trip out you still have to get back.

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | well I know you are adventurous out there Justin, so if you wouldn't do it then that's a strong statement.... I have a couple days I added on to the end that could give me some flexibility for departure, but I would hate to get halfway across the lake and realize I made a pretty horrible mistake.....well, I hope it's not winds out of the S at 2 MPH or else I am going to be tempted at the very worst case I am going to have to invest into some really good rock guards/mud flaps and slow down as said. The little rock marks on the side of my boat, the trailer fender, and the trailer have cost me thousands of dollars in resell value. Edited by Musky Brian 7/13/2015 2:42 PM

Posts: 2045 | My 2002 Ranger trailer (Pre Road Armor coating) got trashed too. Get a properly fit Towtector - Measure with your boat hooked up and you want about 2-3" of clearance and keep it @ 40 mph and you'll be fine

Posts: 43 Location: Roseau, MN | Do a search for Bow Buddy. About 2/3 the cost of a Tranx/Big Nasty combo that you toss into the lake :). I got one this year with the new rig and have run back and forth 4 times now and am pretty happy with it. And if you keep it to 40mph it will only add 20 minutes to your trip. ![]()

While I appreciate your efforts of jumping in the lake before dark, I assure you it is not necessary moving forward

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | I suppose I've made the trip from Warroad to the Angle 50 times or so In my youth. There was no road and if you wanted to fish muskies you either boated over, took the passenger boat, or flew with Don Hanson. It always seemed like when it was time to come back home the winds would be blowing! Once I had a weeks vacation at Flag Island with a pregnant wife and was suppose to be to work on Monday. Took off Friday evening, but turned around at Driftwood point facing 30 MPH winds. The next day I put my wife on the Bert Steel (50 ft passenger boat) and I followed in an 18'er. Winds gusting to 60 MPH out of the SE. Took 9 hours to get to Warroad. Very Interesting trip. I wouldn't recommend boating across if you don't have to, unless you have a very flexible schedule. The Morson Route is a little better lake wise, but you have some custom issues to deal with. Drove up today, Road was good, but that can change. Doug Johnson

Posts: 4 | I have installed rock guards that mount on the hitch (from Cabela's) and rock guards that mount on the boat trailer (bought from someplace in Montana if I remember correctly). They seem to work adequately. The Canadian portion of the road has been in pretty good shape this year. Doug, enjoyed your story. I remember back in the mid 80"s when they would leave the bulldozer parked by some of the bad spots east of Jim's corner.

Posts: 309 Location: Elgin IL | I know I had the same thoughts when my boat was new. Drove out of Morson a few times. NOT worth it you will be watching the weather all week don't need that stress all week. Problem is you have a full boat and they don't run well when they are over loaded. Posts: 153 | We used to have a ton of problems when the frost would go out and the road would heave, collapse or turn to mud. That is why the cat was there to pull vehicles through the bad areas. It doesn't happen much anymore since they laid screen down. But back in the late 80's it was pretty bad. Much improved today.
