Posts: 470 | Hey all, Just wanted to share with the forum a pic of my 13 year old son Owen's first Muskie. Caught on Webster Lake, Indiana. He (yes, I checked LOL) was 34" and caught boat side as Owen was going into the figure eight. Fish came out from under the boat and hit a double 8 buck tail. Successfully released with a strong departure (Gave Owen his first "Muskie Shower" as well). As is tradition in our family, Dad will be paying for a replica to go over the fireplace. As a side note on Muskie fishing, this guy hit about 30 seconds after a ski boat passed within 50 yards of our boat between us and shore, right down the break we were fishing at about 30 MPH. Seems Muskie's don't much care about boat traffic. RandalB Attachments ---------------- Owen's 1st.JPG (135KB - 382 downloads)

Posts: 470 | mnmusky - 7/12/2015 12:44 PM right of passage complete. Awesome Congrats to you both! The tradition is kinda a funny story that I'll share with you guys, Back in the late 80's when I was 13, I got bit by the Muskie bug in St. Germain WI where we went for vacation. The other people in the lodge were Muskie guys who told me campfire stories about the mighty Muskie and made me want to catch one. My father who was a boat side perch jerker got sick of me bugging him to fish for them and told me I'd never catch one. He bet me that if I caught a legal Muskie before we went home, he'd pay to have it mounted, give me $100 for tackle and give me all his fishing equipment. Needless to say, I caught one on the last day about 2 hours before we left fishing from shore at the Fawn Lake Dam it was 32" which was the legal limit at the time. Dad paid up and a tradition was born. Both my kids have made their 13 Y/O catches so now I have to wait for some grandkids. and no, I'm not giving my kids all my tackle even though I was nice and let my dad use mine after that trip... Posts: 20229 Location: oswego, il | Very nice! Yes muskies do take advantage of boat wakes. On heidecke lake once the shad bloom gets big enough, I will have 50 seagulls following my boat. There is a reason why people have success trolling baits in the propeash.

Posts: 76 | Congrats Owen AND RandalB----- Webster Lake has been creating SPECIAL memories like yours for DECADES now! It's great to see that wonderful traditions like the one you are experiencing---- will continue into the future out there. My cousin Josh, caught his first musky out there with me during "ski season"----- as did his older sister Jessica before him. Webster is a VERY SPECIAL place----- the amount of memories I've been fortunate enough to be a part of on that body of water is mind blowing. I've been telling people FOR YEARS now-----that the ski boats are a BLESSING, not a curse as most might argue. I've caught over 550 muskies, with the majority coming from Webster itself----- sometimes you just gotta stir the soup to get the big fish moving again. Congrats again on the great accomplishment------ keep on casting-----Pat Elza

I love Wisconsin and always will, but I couldn't justify a 7 hour drive both ways. Webster and Kosciusko county is 1.5 hours from home and will make for much more time on the water and lots more pics and memories like this one. Look for the Pontoon boat dragging a clownfish flag and you'll see us out there. Thanks for all the comments folks, my son is reading them as they come in. RandalB

RandalB-- that $100 in tackle you got in the early 80's is about 300 to $400+ in today's dollars. And since he's reading this, DONT let your dad off the hook. get all those baits you got coming. Maybe a nice new spendy reel...haha, sorry dad.

Fortunately I'm learned from my father's mistakes and didn't make that bet.. I know better. Nothing muskies like better than laughing at fate and making a fool out of you. (hitting when the net is put away, etc) He's pretty well set on the equipment end of things, but he has been bugging me for a 9' rod. He got a Abu NACL for his birthday which he really likes. Maybe I'll be getting him a 9' TI rod at the end of the season... As far as the baits go, the kids always get first crack at the tackle box and fight over the "best" lures.. LOL - I'm the one throwing the old beat up stuff.. Thanks for all the comments guys, I like to make a big deal out of the first catch (and all the other ones too..) RandalB

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | Congrats on the catch and great memories. Two of our boys have moved out and don't fish with them as often now that they're older. The 13 year old goes when he feels like lol. Our youngest is 3 and she loves the pics but has me spending more time on beach than in the boat but can't wait to catch one with her in the boat. Keep up the great work getting the youngsters in to the sport!

Posts: 470 | They are only interested in fishing with Dad for so long, gotta spend the time while you've got it. That's the way I look at it... Then you pass the sickness (Muskie fishing) on to the grandkids.. LOL RandalB Edited by RandalB 7/18/2015 6:36 AM
