Does anybody know the thickness of the plywood (if there is any) that is verticle under the gunwales on a 2003 Crestliner 1750 Fishhawk? It is quite possible that the carpet is glued directly to the hull. I am looking to mount some additional rod hangers but am concerned about fastening directly to the "sidewall".

The decks are 3/4" marine plywood, but the sides you are talking about are the hull, no wood.

What you can do is get some aluminum bar stock (1/8"x1" wide) bend it so you can rivet it to the underside of the gunnel and screw it to the topside of the deck. You will then have a bracket to mount too.

You could also mount a piece of carpeted plywood that is slightly smaller than the width of the gunwale to attach the railing.

On one of my previous boats I took it one step further though;

Nyloc bolted the railing to squares of carpeted Trex mounted on top of the carpeted plywood for a little more railing height. It really locked things down by countersinking the railing bolts (actually the nuts) under the Trex first, then mount the Trex with the railing already attached with 4 large screws per block… it turned out good and was a very functional/bulletproof set-up with a HD railing stanchion.

For you guys who use rails for trolling; I have had these type of stanchions break when it gets cold.
