Posts: 346 | We here more and more how jigs can turn a non productive day into a highly productive day. In fact, Loren Waalkens wrote "Jigging for Late Season Lunge" and Tom Dietz wrote "Plastics, The Ultimate Secret Weapon for Spring & Fall!" just to name two. But you never here how jigs are used in tournys or jigs put a competitive angler in the top 5, etc, etc. Are people hesitant to fish with that method in a tournament? Just curious, MJB

Posts: 62 | MJB, My name is Chris Drury. My partner, Rich Gallagher and I used jigs on the deep weedline 10 to 14 feet on the Madison Chain during the PMTT last May. We got hit with a pretty good cold front that evaporated our glide bait pattern. We were able to get a 41" fish on a 1 oz. Strike King Bass Jig with a 5" tube trailer. It was good enough for 3rd Place. Mike Jensen and Jeff Van Dyke took 7th during this Tournament using jigs as well. Mike was using a 7" Lizard on a Bass jig. During the PMTT on Cass Lake, Monty Stanton & Rick Sumudlach caught a 52 1/4" on a jig fishing the weed edge on Saturday. I think they were fishing the reed edges. Also good for a 3rd Place finish. Another cold front had moved through with high winds both days. I am still new to the whole "Jig" thing but have had good success last year using jigs when a cold front has moved in. Most of the fish have come from the weed edge. It's still under-utilized by most fisherman and I'll be honest, it's not the most exciting fishing but I cannot deny the results. Monty and Rick I believe are big jig fisherman. They could probally shed some more light on techniques. I think Steve Worrall hosted a chat a few weeks back on jigging. Gene Curtis, a guide on the Eagle River Chain (I think) is another jig man. His "Curtis Creature" has produced many big fish. There is a good Chapter about Gene in Musky Mastery by Steve Heiting. In-Fishernam had a great segment on TV last year about J-Mac Jigs and Manns Jelly-Hoo trailers. It was also featured in the Magazine. I hope this helps. Drop me a line at [email protected] if I can be a any more help. Thanks. Chris Drury

Posts: 1536 Location: God's Country......USA..... Western Wisconsin | I have done remarkably well on jigs in tourneys over the years. Once fished a WPMA tournament on Bone Lake a number of years back in which Jim Nauer and Gene Mahs won, with 10 legals boated in two days. All on Jigs and lizards. Paul Thorne and his partner had 5 fish as did my partner and myself, all on Jigs. Thats the first three places and 20 fish with various styles of jigs and plastics. They do indeed have their place in the tournament fishermans arsenal.

whitchdoctor, Nice looking bait. Do you swim it in or jig it? If you do jig how high do jig them off the bottom? Thanks

Posts: 32922 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Here are three of the jigs I throw. The Lizard type body is a Fliptail Creature, one I designed working with the original owners back in the late 70's. The other two are designs Jim Cairnes and I did, one on a diamond head jig, the other on a swimmer. These lures catch fish, and can win an event handily. Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]()

Posts: 62 | Anon, I jig it as though I was Bass fishing. The In-Fisherman article on the J-Mac and Jellyhoo talked about swimming the jig 20 ft. or so at a time. I have not spent time trying that to be honest. Hope this helps. Chris

Jigging can be deadly at times. The only problem that I have with throwing them in tournaments is that they are fished slowly. I typically look to cover water in tournaments and jigs are not great for this. But there are times when it is necessary. I also fished the pmtt madison event last year and did not do well but boated two legals the day prior on 8" berkley power lizards. Figures I get skunked in the tourney.
