Posts: 64 | Hey guys! Need a little direction here. Picked up 1995 Ranger last month and wanted to replace the keel guard for the fact it was peeling in two different spots. Once I started removing, noticed the keel was pretty bad and the gel coat was completely gone. Also noticed toward the rear the gel coat was bubbling and had chipped off in a couple of spots about the size of a pee. Should I be worried about the keel with the gel coat scrapped off from rocks I amgine, or just put a new keel guard on??? And the pee size spots in the back, should those be a worry?? If so, my question is WHO does good work in the Twin Cities at a reasonable price??? Thanks in advance and hope to have this baby ready for the Muskie opener!!

Posts: 72 | Depending on how bad it is, there is a patch repair product similar to gel coat that would work without having to get into re-glassing/gel coating it. I can't remember the name of it but you can apply/smooth it on yourself and sand it back to make it flush with the existing gel coat. Call Express Composites (612) 789-8621 and tell them what you have and are trying to do, they can help you out.

Posts: 1209 | If you were willing to peel off a keel guard you can fix it yourself since color matching won't be an issue since you will replace a new keel guard. Many products on the market for this the stuff I used to do this came in a red pint can with a tube of hardener. Takes five minutes to cure. Follow preparation and cleanup on the can it's easy.

Posts: 2754 Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | Get some fiberglass gell w/ hardner at local auto parts store & seal the scratches & any holes that are through the gell coat, if not you are going to have problems as described, e.g., from water ingress into the fiber glass - thats what is causing his bubbles. Just follow instructions on the can - try to keep right ratio of hardner to gell so it sets up properly....a little less hardner is better than to much. Envirotex will work too, its a gell based product in smaller packages, e.g., if you only need a little for repairs of minor stuff. You definitely need to get those bubbles fixed too. All: This is something you need to watch for when buying used glass boats...or if you own one! Have fun! Al Edited by ESOX Maniac 5/4/2015 7:19 AM
