Posts: 275 | I've always noticed that when used reels are posted for sale the term "minor" or "normal" boat rash is stated. Viewing the pictures I see the rash on the tops of the reels they are referring to. I've always laid my rods in the boat with the reel facing up and after years my reels look much newer than most....just caught my attention and wondered why it seems alot of guys lay their rods in the boat reel facing down. I'm not criticizing anyones methods, i'm just curious since I just saw a picture on a recent post with the reel facing down. Jaimy

Posts: 556 | When I fish with a partner which is 90% of the time---we both usually end up with around 3-4 rods/reel combo's each in the boat----While I also take care in placing my reels in the upright position ----bouncing of the boat--and excitement/confusion while fishing and fighting fish-- mine do end up in other positions and spots during the day---that is how mine will sustain some scratches/scuffs. I have some reels I still use that are 6 seasons old--after that time--they can LOOK USED--especially on the top and palming plate of the reel,

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | That's funny, I've had the same thought. I fish quite a lot, and I actually keep my reels laying on the boat carpet with the reel laying flat on the carpet (rod upside down). They don't have boat rash, and sit that way during transport, on runs from one spot to the next - pretty much always. If that doesn't give them boat rash, I'm not sure what is. I do take care of them though and don't throw them around or drop them in the boat, take care to leave them on the carpet vs sitting on a metal hinge, etc. Mine get faded after being in the sun for hours on hours, but no real boat rash. Location: varies | I see them as tools meant to be used. I'm not out to look fashionable. It's what's on the inside that matters to me. scratches don't worry me in the least As long as it's functions well.

Posts: 1202 Location: Money, PA | I like laying mine down with rod down, reel on top, leaned over to the right, rod tip pointing slightly towards the middle of the boat unless of course its my top end rods which always point slightly NNW at all times. Seriously???

I beat the hell out of mine too… could almost care less about scratching the case on the reels. They regularly bounce along on top of each other with my primary concern being that the line doesn't get nicked from a hook point ect.

Seriously??? Well, yeah. Kind of seriously. I don't beat the hell of of anything I own, since it isn't much harder to take care of it and keep it looking and working well. I suppose my boat and truck are just tools too but I don't back my truck into poles or trees or let my boat bang against a dock without bumpers. If I'm buying something used, I really can have no idea how it was treated and the maintenance schedule, but I'll almost always pick the one (no matter if it's truck, reel, pressure washer, ATV) that looks well kept visually. I figure if the previous owner cared about the exterior they likely cared about the interior. If the exterior is beat up and dirty??? Some guys seem to take pride in how rough they are on gear. I don't understand that? Tucker

Location: 31 | No pride taken in beating them up them up here, it's just faster/easier to throw them down and stay focused on other more important things (to me) like catching fish. I sometimes have 9/10 rods/reels on deck, and trying to keep them from getting scratched while motoring from spot to spot would simply takes too much time and effort, and would be fighting a losing battle anyway. I'm able to separate how I take care of a fishing reel, and how I take care of my boat/vehicle.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | My fishing rods/reel get the crap smacked out of them, largely because they bounce around in a jon boat as much or more as on a carpeted deck. For boat rash, I use diaper cream.

Posts: 1283 | I usually carry any where from 3-9 rods on deck of a older 17ft bass boat. Theres really no way to keep them organized underway so they bump into each other. Its not about not wanting to take care of them. Imagine guys with little tin boats, or resort rentals.

Amen brother ! Some folks are just on different product cycles/trends. Equipment abuse may just serve as an easy justification to upgrade. Simply stated, buy quality, take care of it, and it lasts.

Posts: 84 | Some people will always trash their stuff, and then always have a excuse why its trashed. I take care of my tackle and rarely have a break down. I have seen this a million times working all kinds of cars, trucks etc, as a mechanic. They always wonder why their stuff breaks down so much and tell them treat your stuff better and it wont break down as often and look better and when you go to trade in or sell your stuff you will get top dollar for it. But they never listen, and then they want me to have mercy on them and fix their junk for cheap and fast, then when I tell I cant do that their stuff needs a lot of repairs and its going to cost more money then they want to spend they look at me like I broke their junk not them? Go figure, these are the people that keep repair shops in business because they never learn or care. I have a friend who asks me how can he get better MPGs out of his truck and I told slow down don't drive 80,85 MPH, it will make a big difference.

My gear could be sold as new if people did t ask questions. Rods have sleeves, reels have covers, seats have temporary rugs to keep gear from beating the seats. If you want to take care of your gear, there is a way to do so...

Posts: 8840 | When you make a 10 mile trip down an unpaved road in the rain, everything in the boat is going to be covered in grit and sand by the time you get to the lake. When you're going 30 miles each way in 3 footers in an aluminum camp boat with no carpeting and 8 rods in a pile, your gear is going to take a beating right along with your backside. It's all carpeting, paved roads, rod lockers, and small lakes for some guys, and that's great. For other guys, stuff gets trashed when you're not even using it, and there's little you can do to stop it.

Posts: 1209 | I baby my gear when I can but in the moment and any thing that may happen I see boat rash on my bass reals after a couple seasons. But I believe my musky equipment is mint. Only having 5 to battle it out in my 11' rod locker must pare them plus I make friends and my dad use the side 10'+ locker for there's. That being said I keep my equipment functional over pretty and it just adds character.
