Well I just learned that my aunt that passed away a few months ago included all of her nieces and nephews in her will. So I am going to be inheriting some money. Not a ton that I will be able to buy a new truck or boat but I am getting something. She was a good lady and I kind of want to buy something that I will always be able to remember her by versus peeing it away, so I am asking you guys for feedback. I have been doing this muskie fishing a long time and it is my main hobby so to be honest I am set up good and am struggling a bit? I have the rods/reels I need but I was kind of thinking buying 2 St Croix Legends, one 7'6" for jerk baits and a 8'6" Big Dawg for big blades. I am honestly not sure at this time if I will get enough money for that but I wanted to start thinking.

What other thoughts would you guys have?

Thanks and have a good day

There are some really talented guys in the basement baits forum. You could have them paint up a few customs, even with her name on them or in her favorite colors. What about your trolling motor? Or electronics? Any upgrades you'd want there? I put some LED lights all along the under side of my gunnel two years ago from superbrightleds.com and it turned out good. Lastly, you could always donate a little money in her honor to a charity she or you are passionate about.

A replica could be neat and always memorable, you could have the creator write a message on the bottom before the finish coat.

Custom plugs all the way. Over the years you will upgrade all your equipment. A good custom lure you can use and admire for life. When you get a fish you will think of her. Just don`t snag it on the bottom.

I would buy the best reel for a double ten or the best rod for a pounder. Trouble is that information is impossible to come by.

Ask yourself, what would your aunt want you to do with the money?

If baits at your choice, look at your arsenal, see where your gaps are. What do you need for the places you fish?

What baits do you throw the most I would have a custom rod built. Use her favorite color's for the thread and have them write in memory of your aunt's name the year she is born and when she died making it a tribute rod to her.

Sorry to hear about your aunt.

I guess it depends on how much money you actually get, but I'd do some really nice custom lures. Or if it was a lot of money, I'd take a trip somewhere that I otherwise would never take. Maybe Alaska or something like that, something you will remember forever. Reels break, rods break, stuff wears out... But memories last forever.

Good advice.

Of course it depends on how much money we are talking about here, but why not get a few quality musky items and invest the remainder ? Properly invested, it may turn into a new Ranger 620 over a period of time...

Yeah, I'd do some nice custom baits too. I recently had a garage/house fire in Sept. 2011 and lost all my muskie gear from over 30 yrs. fishing.

I decided not to replace ALL my old stuff but buy 1/10th the # of baits but...some really good stuff. So far it's working out.
I figured I'd lost 3 tackle boxes full and certainly didn't wish to return to that.

Danged if I didn't...

Take your time and get only what you need. It'll grow soon enough.

I'm sorry to hear of your relatives passing. The question raised above of what would she want is a good one.

If she wanted you to achieve greater satisfaction in your fishing then by all means imo she would want You to invest in You, is that too deep? She would want you to become better, she would want you to gain a better understanding of how fish (muskies) use bottom features to move about a body of water and where you would have the Best chance. She would want you to know that fish are either shallow, deep, or some where in-between, (she might... ha ha) that they spend the greater part of their time in deep water and "may" move towards the shallows once or twice on a average fishing day. (she would want you to know this, really) Knowing this as a fishing fact,,, then all depths must be reached both trolling and casting and it takes a variety of "tools, Lures etc.) to accomplish this. A double 10 can not be trolled at 45' or would it make much sense in casting a Mann's 50 plus into a bed of cabbage.

The knowledge or ability to interpret a body of water is the key to every lake and it takes not just this knowledge but the right tools as well. If fishing "straggler" fish casting or trolling (water 8-10' or less) is all that you wish then by buy all the flashy lures you can afford. But if you want to be able to go to any body of water and feel right at home no matter the conditions then I would highly recommend purchasing the educational materials necessary to get you to that point before you ever spend a single red cent on lures.

Best of luck,

I bought a print and framed it when my grampa died. Been 18 years and it still hangs there in his memory. I took part of the inheritance and bought a used Tuffy too. I honored him with it because he was a fisherman. Sadly he and his best friend/neighbor died fishing when their boat overturned. The divers said there was a fish on the line.

Thanks so much for the feedback guys.

The best response was "what would my Aunt want me to do with the money".

So I honestly don't know how much it will be yet. So I am going to split it 5 ways.
1. My wife gets 1/5 for a special present?
2. My son gets 1/5 for a special present? (Maybe we will go on a hunt?)
3. I get something, not sure what yet. Kind of leaning toward 2 rods yet with her name on them. But I am not sure what kind, I was thinking a 7'6" Legend and a Big Dawg? I could use some help with this.
4. 1/5 gets invested.
5. With the remainder I am going to split it up and I think I will buy savings bonds for my 6 nieces and nephews.

If anyone wants to give me feedback on the rods I would appreciate it.

Thanks and Have a great day.

Buy nothing. Flip the money without taxes into retirement savings. You already have what you need right now, you see.

As far as rods go you could go a custom rod with some type of memory incorporated. Tuscarora tackle is great at incorporating these types of themes. That is what I am getting my best man as a present for being in my wedding

Wow. I fully expected a recommendation for an ounce of weed and a 3 day pass to the Chicago Dead shows.

Do whatever you want to do to add gear to your arrsenal. But if you would like to do something in her memory. I would look into getting one of your "favorite" baits. Then getting it customized with maybe a picture of you and her, or just her in a good time of her life and have that put on the bait and epoxy put over that. I have seen a few in the past and they look really cool. Obviously not something that you would toss fishing, but it would most likely be a pretty cool display/collector piece for you to keep in her memory. IDK just a thought
