Subject: Gel coat repair

So i got a good deal on an old glass boat. There are a few gouges through the gel coat with exposed fiberglass. The cost to repair it "the right way" is more than the boat is worth in my opinion. The gouges are on the very bottom under the back deck so could care less about looks. Has anybody just filled a defect like this with marine tex or somthing similar and just sanded smooth? The main point is just to keep the glass from retaining water correct?

All you need to do is buy gel coat that is close in color. Clean out the damaged area with Acetone. Mix the gel coat, get a piece of clear packing tape ready and a body putty plastic squeegee. Place enough mixed gelcoat on the tape sticky side to fill the damaged area and squeegee it over the area. Let it kick, peel off the tape, use 600 grit sandpaper to sand it down, and buff it with polishing compound. Done!

Marine tex will work fine to seal it. Make sure that area is dry. Grind away any loose material. Make sure it is clean and fill it in. Use tape to hold in place if it wants to sag. Not pretty, but will work.
