Am I nuts, or do I recall some of you sending your Shimano reels back to them for free cleaning and lubing? If yes, how and where please?

I might be wrong but when you buy a new reel there is a coupon in the box for one free cleaning

Shimano doe not Clean reels, they are a service center for Warranty work or parts replacement.
