is it worth getting the gears switched on the winch or would it be better just go get a different reel?

yah seems silly to drop $70 into a reel that already was ~260 new... so you'll have 330 into the reel, might as well just pick up a used tranx for about the same price...or spend 170 on a saltist that is good speed reel too...

"I was curious about the cost of switching a 50 nacl hs to 5.4."

For this I would just swap reels with someone that has a nacl 5:4 50 for a nacl 50hs and save yourself some money because it will be a whole lot cheaper to ship a reel than buying those gears.

Yes. I didn't know how much they cost. The 50 and 50 HS are listed as the same gears. That doesn't make sense. Misprint or I'm not understanding how it works.

I would go with a NACL 60 5.4. If your looking for a Abu with good cranking power and decent speed. The Toro HS has 6.4 gears and isnt as easy on you or the reel cranking 10s. The wider spool on the 60 also keeps the IPT up.

They are not the same number. The parts you have in a HS reel is 1160665 and 1204943 and to convert to a 5:4 you need 1160666 and 1204944. They are not the same part numbers. But like I said, due to the popularity of the NACL 50HS, I'm sure you can trade someone with a NACL 50 and only invest something like $10 for postage to get a NACL 50.

I'll just keep the HS and look for 60 in 5.4. This is the parts listing I saw.

Interesting. Abu website gives you the ereplacement link and I could not find NACL on abu site. I'm now wondering if my bearing housing is wrong. Bait clicker has not worked since I replaced and it looks just a touch smaller. Ereplacement part is 1190580.

Next time call Abu and their parts staff is very knowledgeable and can get you your parts you need. Have your reel handy for them (need the model numbers off the reel foot) to aid in them getting the correct part for that reel.
Have a great season
