Location: Scandia MN | I have a 15 ft. Carolina Skiff with a 25 HP Honda I use on small rivers. Boat will plane OK with just me in it but will not with a second passenger. I know the only difference between this motor and the 30 HP are the carbs. Does anyone know if the carbs are different or do the just put a restrictor plate somewhere in the mix? If it is new carbs I'll be needing would the extra 5 HP do the trick? This boat is rated for 40 HP and I would happily trade up to a 40 if I could find a dealer willing to take my 25 in the bargain. Anybody out there know of a place that might do that? |

What they probably do is use a different set of jets within the carb itself. If you can get to a set of schematics, you might be able to determine the different jet sizes needed. This will help in getting the extra HP, but I woudn't be too sure if there are not a couple of other things going on as well.... I wouldn't be surprised if there might be timing changes, exhaust tuner, etc...things that are not so apparent.
A good start on getting the boat to perform better is to get some baseline numbers...in your case, speed and prop specs. With that size rig, I would not be surprised if you did not have a tach, but if you do, that would be very helpful as well... From there, it might be just a prop change as was suggested.

Location: Scandia MN | OK Thanks - It has an 8 pitch prop which is as low as they go. Your correct that it has no tach but I have a well trained ear. I've looked around a lot and there is a dearth of information on this topic. I might have to find a Honda dealer with not enough to do. Wish me luck on that. |
