I have to say that I am encouraged to see Shimano offering all three of the D models in left hand retrieve... Especially the 301, that is the one I'd be most interested in w/ the 5.6 gears...Now all they need to do is make lefty Tranx! They also need to fix their website description that lists the new D series as having a "Non-disengaging" levelwind.

I just looked at Tackle Warehouse and they also list it as a non disengaging levelwind.

I've caught tarpon over 200lbs on it and literally tried to rip the spool out of the reel and it's still perfect. So smooth it doesn't feel like the gears are engaged! Tossed everything under the sun with it including double 13's and it worked just fine. BTW, the level wind disengages, a feature I personally prefer as long as it doesn't create drag gallop or undue stress on the level wind, which does not seem to be the case with this little beauty. Believe me, if this thing hold up to full sized tarpon, muskies will not be an issue. Relocation of drag star is more comfortable due to the effect of less lateral torque against your "non-cranking" hand because of less leverage created by shorter crank shaft. best L from Larry D.

Posts: 84 Location: Buffalo Grove, IL | Yeah, I took the plunge on this reel. I haven't even seen one in person, but I figure it's no worse than guys who bought the TranX without seeing one in person. In fact it's probably better since this reel is at least similar to the TE's and I like the idea of the smaller non-crank side. Looking forward to getting it and then using it. And I actually like the new silver color versus the gold color. Silver shows scratches a lot less too.

When someone hints like that it makes me check back several times a day which is often bad for work productivity.

Posts: 716 | I used the new reel for half of the day yesterday and was really impressed with the smoothness of the gearing. For me the feel was like fluid power..no sensation that you are turning gears at all. The smoother gearing also aids in the transmission of power ...smooth = less power lost in turnig the gears. The only downside I could see is the lack of a clicker for those who desire that feature. I really liked the reel, the feel factor is so good...the smoother gears let you feel every little tick and vibration change during the retrieve. It's hard to believe it can be so much better than a TE for that type of application but it is.

My TEs, LJV, and Trinidad all have power handles on them.. Cant see myself with one of these reels till they have one available..

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Here is a pic of the new 300 next to a 300TE, look at the handle on the D, it is very long !!! with the D handle being 102mm long and the TE only 90mm long the D reels will reel baits in with less effort. Posts: 1901 Location: MN | Heard a rumor today that the Calcutta LJV is also being discontinued, and Shimano is out. If the D is replacing that as well, I hope it lives up to its billing. I do like the power handle on the LJV. Maybe one can be rigged on the D, or maybe it won't need one if it's as good as Bob says. I plan to get a D and put it through the paces.

Posts: 100 | I think he means that Shimano has no more LJV reels in supply, I suspect the same applies to the TE. Although the D is a move forward in terms of design it seems to have a lot of plastic parts. One of the reasons that I prefer my conquest over my winch is that I prefer the feel of the calcutta, it has many more metal parts and just feels like a better reel. I feel like it will still work when my kids find it 50 years from now when they are cleaning out my stuff. Not sure if the increase in plastic parts in the D will affect the "feel" or longevity of the reel.

Posts: 144 Location: Loves Park, IL | I'm not a big fan of the reels that have the level wind disengage. What do you guys think of that feature? I love my 400te but I'm hesitating to get a 400d since the level wind disengages. I just don't like the line crossing from the opposite side of where the level wind is on the casts. Have any of you had problems with this? Thanks. Jeff

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | The new D will handle a DCG 10 the same as a TE. The new D does have a little taller spool over the TE so Shimano gave the new D a longer handle to make winding line on the taller spool easier. It is one of the smoothest reel I own.
