Posts: 1764 Location: Ogden, Ut | First of all, thanks so much for all of the kind words. It means a lot coming from a peer group like you; because you all know what kind of hard work, time on the water and luck goes into an event like this. I also need to recognize my family for allowing that much time on the water in the pursuit of these beasts, they were nearly as excited as I was. And lastly, my netman and substitute matchfishing partner Larry Davis, a retired game warden who was unselfish enough to refuse the rod as I tried to hand it to him. Thanks a million. To address a few of the questions and comments... Hopeful - one big is much more gratifying than 10-14 small and I was out of homebrews, so it was a Labatt Blue that was the chosen celebratory beverage. Rob - muskie destination? probably not since I've been trying for 11 years to get a fish like that before finally succeeding! Reference to being a tiger king or god are wildly overblown you boneheads! (It is however, quite flattering, but still makes my wife crack up) I'm just a guy that puts in quite a bit of time on a single water, and you have to endure my 'same old same old' pictures and stories year after year! I'm just glad I finally got a chance to show you something a bit different this time. As far as naturals, I'd probably never support them out here. First, there's a very narrow window of conditions in which they'd thrive in our waters. The biologists know what works best in those waters despite what the layperson may think or wish for. Second, we have an epidemic occurrence of anglers moving fish around from water to water; more often than not this results in a catastrophic failure of a fishery and a big black eye to those of us who do support our predator programs. Fertile fish are just too risky out here. As far as releasing a big fish, or for that matter a fish that is almost unique... In retrospect, it is somewhat odd that I never really considered keeping it. I mean, I have been involved in many discussions on this very site about 'what would you do if?' In each of those, I think I indicated that I probably would not keep the fish, but felt that the possibility was so remote that further discussion was basically unwarranted. Well, it happens. And it makes you rethink some of the notions you conveniently jot down on a message board. I'm glad I released the fish, but please don't think of me as some kind of a hero for doing it any more than you would have thought me a villain for keeping it. But I can tell you it's a good feeling to watch it swim away One can't choose to catch a 50" fish, those chances are ephemeral and all too infrequent, but you can choose to let one go that you have caught. Personal decision. It was (and still is) a great fish, but if you guys really want to make me happy, send Jody Dahms a message thanking him for letting go one that was about 20 lbs heavier! Sorno p.s. Anyone out there handy w/ photoshop so I can have a copy of the fish w/o that silly cucumber? LOL

Posts: 2089 | K, Just back from the latest Mille Lacs Oddysey and OMG, that is an incredible fish!!!!!!! Your call this am was awesome. I could still hear the excitement in your voice. Buddy, you've put a lot into the fishery out there and the rewards speak for themselves. Wait til a 10yr old catches one of those and FOLLOWS YOUR LEAD. It will all come full circle. I can't tell you how happy I am for you. Good things happen to good people, who work their butts off!!!!!! I sure hope those folks out there realize the asset they have in you. Are you sure that fish wasn't from MN. , 'cause I didn't see any mountains!!!!LOL. Steve

do you think that fish was a state record? i talked to Sorno today, and he looked up the measurements on the previous Utah state record: 49" x 21" and 33 lbs. the formula predicts a fish of those dimensions at only 27.01 lbs, but that was a carefully measured, weighed, and certified fish due to it being a state record and came in at 5 lbs heavier than the formula predicted. my assumption is that the formula underestimates weight on tigers, possibly due to them maintaining their girth throughout more of their body length? regardless, Sorno's tiger measured 51.25" x 24". the formula would put this fish at 36.9 lbs, almost 4 lbs higher than the current Utah state record. considering the underestimation on the other fish, Sorno's could have been even heavier than that. for perspective: if he beat the state record by 4 lbs on a 33 lbs fish = 12%. to beat the current MN state record muskie of 54 lbs by 12% would require someone to go out and catch a 60 lb fish... he didn't just beat the record, he demolished it.
