This one runs like a monkey and I hooked a real pig with it last Sunday. Lost him when he launched out of the water though.

Cut this bait from a piece of cherry and used stainless steel for the lip. Really starting to favor the stainless steel for the lips on some of the baits. Has a great action because its thinner than Lexan and a nice flash to it.

Very nice Fatfingers. When I picture your style, this is what comes to mind. I love the water color effect.

Awesome baits but I have a dumb question. What is the deal with the line tie on top of the manta?

Thanks, you guys.

The extra line tie is another option to produce something different in the way of action with the bait. The line tie further back and on the sloping forhead instead of the front creates a different pivot point when the rod tip is swept. Will it work? Lol, we'll find out, but the worst that can happen is that I'll just use the nose line tie instead.

Most of the baits I copy, are a learning process for me and I like to try adding or subtracting an element to see what the bait does differently. Sometimes small changes can produce vicious strikes from an otherwise ordinary bait style.

I do a lot of experimentation with crankbaits and jerkbaits. The lip angle, material, and size are all variables that I toy with. That is not to say that you won't have failures in the process but that's okay. I'm in it for fun, not profit, and I have come up with several styles that no one else is making that I know of, and a hand full of them have been real producers on our local waters.

Jerkbaits and gliders are a line that I think can still be improved upon. The Suick is one that I'm going to take on this summer or fall. Here's a couple of other styles that I'm going to be testing soon:

The bottom one is a bit hard to see in the above photo so here's a better one showing the way I intend to tip the tail with a bucktail:
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The Deep Bert is has been a "go to" bait for me in the past, as has the Suick, but I think both baits can be modified and improved.

If you build gliders, you know how much experimentation is required just to get the weighting right. You can imagine how changing several variables at once can be problematic. None the less. it is fun and I've had a few real home runs with a few that I came up with.

The lathe baits are a whole "nuther" thing. I bought a lathe a few months ago, and I built a glider that runs fantastic. I've already tested it and its waiting in the paint shop to be paint...lol, along with about 35 or 40 others, but I'll get to it and I intend to fish it quite a bit this year during the peak season. That's one of the problems with musky baits. You don't really know if the bait is a producer or not, until you fish it enough during the right times at the right places, over the right structure, etc, under the right conditions.

Don't have a picture of the lathe-made gliders yet, but I'll post them when I get them painted.

Here's a few more of the variations of standard baits I'll be trying this year. They're made of a variety of woods, including cherry, maple, and sintra signboard:

It's all madness, really.

But I can't stop.

I'm not sure if you meant to get the "blow through" on the black spots or not. If not, reduce your air pressure and watch your proximity to what you're painting. You won't get the spidering .Just sharing a tip. Sorry if you had done that intentionally.

It can be a cool effect but it's also something that beginners do by accident. Looks great on the bait though.

Fellow baitmakers,

i do have a hardcopy of the Suomi-book, and it's amazing !!and no, i don't read,
understand or write Finnish too but a picture tells more than a 1000 words.
and there are 500 pictures in it!!

good luck Vesku.

Snax,
I'm confused by your back and forth on copying baits. Is it ok in your eyes or not? Or does it depend on who's doing the copying, or whose baits are getting copied?

And why did you have to make this statement?

Well shoot, I'll throw my hat in the ring!

These are Showgirl/Gerry Kid type baits. For a pure BEGINNER the flashabou is extremely easy to work with. I have to say after throwing some of Gerry Carroll's baits early this year and falling in love with the flashabou material I had to try my hand at making a few myself. That stuff comes absolutely alive in the water more, IMO, than silicone, bucktail, even marabou (a close second to flashabou).

Components:
7/0 Mustad 3551 (shrink tubed to wire)
.045 wire
#8 Colorado blades/#7 Indiana's on one of them
#6 clevis

All blades hammered to increase light reflection. All baits have two blades each. 1/2 ounce "keel" weight to increase casting distance and keep the bait down when burning.

Would love input, good or bad!!

Not sure why the file size limit is only 100 KB. Sorry for the small pic sizes.
