Before we leave the 50-pounders for the Land of Real Monsters, we'll close out with three shots of the current World Angling record. It was caught by Lothar Louis. It was 53.5-inches long and had a girth of 29-inches. It weighed 55-pounds 1 3/4-ounces!

Now into fantasy land...60-pounders. However, I must tell you that NONE of these giants were caught by angling!

This first one is a 62 1/2-pound behemouth that was 57 1/2-inches long. It was brought forth by "The Louie Spray" of Europe! Jorg Notzli submitted this fish as a world record and it was accepted...for a time, until it was learned that he regularly bought big pike from commercial fishermen and entered them in contests!! Sound familiar? This took place in 1979.

Next to last is a reported 64-pound Pike that was found dead in Austria in 1990. According to The Pike Ferret, the fish was actually 63 1/2-pounds and 58-inches long and had a girth that exceeded 31-inches. It died full of spawn, apparently unable to discharge its eggs. It will take over the #2 spot on Jan's list.

And last but certainly not least, is quite possibly the largest Esox that has ever been weighed. Pictures from Jan Eggers and a bit of info from Andreas Mangold:

The fish was taken on March 10th, 1983 in a gill net. The Giant Pike was full of spawn and weighed a colossal 67-pounds 3 3/4-ounces and is in the number one spot on Jan Eggers big Pike list that contains over 750 Pike over 40-pounds, taken by any means throughout the world. Like all of us, he likes tales of 70, 80 or 90-pound Pike, but as I with muskies, he feels it is more important to concentrate more on those Pike that are more representative of true Pike potential growth.

From Andreas we learned of the spawn and the fact that this fish was only 12-years old!! It obtained this massive growth in a 180 yard by 180 yard pond that contained all the food necessary for this growth. The owner of the pond wanted this fish out of his pond because it was eating all the grebes, ducks and coots that visited the pond!

Well, this is it for Pike. Some day soon we'll do "Esox Oddities"...Larry

lennyg3: The have been! Hybrid Tigers in Germany and muskies in North Africa. They apparently didn't do too well or didn't survive their trip. Conversely, Amur Pike from the Amur River between China and Russian have been brought to the US and did well for a time in Pennsylvania. They look more like a spotted muskie, except they have pike-like fins. They were called "Russian Muskies" when they were brought over.
