Since 1980's the arctic has lost approximately 40% of it's sea ice. 2012-2013 was a record low for sea ice, and while 2013-2014 was not as bad, it's still part of a downward trend. There is a big difference between the weather, which is local, and effects on the global environment.

And in the late seventies we were going through global cooling...

I do find it rather ironic that the ship that set out to the Antarctic to prove climate change/global warming got stranded in ice that the scientists had sought to prove was melting. However, the professor of global warming at Australia's University of New South Whales remained adamant that the sea ice is melting, even as the boat remained trapped in frozen seas. You cannot make this stuff up.

it's not spring until we have a thread about the conservation congress, those backwards northwoods hicks and legalizing motor trolling in vilas and oneida counties …

who's gonna start the thread?!

From the Fishing Wire today:

"30 Inches of Ice Remains on Some Wisconsin Lakes

| March 28, 2014

Up to 30 inches of ice continues to be reported on northern lakes with very few ice anglers out. Most are waiting for the melt to trigger panfish activity. As of this week, the ice road was still being used to access Madeline Island on Lake Superior, and ice anglers have been venturing out to the islands in search of lake trout and whitefish. Anglers were still reporting thick ice on Green Bay, but getting out onto the ice is becoming tricky on the west shore with access points breaking up. The east shore has better access but with any sustained warm temperatures that will change quickly. Anglers continue to report success with whitefish and also with some perch.

The ice on the Fox River is breaking up and some small boats have been hitting the water in search for the walleyes. Southeastern Lake Michigan tributaries are opening up and anglers have begun catching steelhead and brown trout on the Sheboygan, Milwaukee and Root rivers.

Winter storm Warning starting tonight. 12"-20" snow with more possible to go on the foot and half that we still have. Here's a recent YouTube of a fellow drilling through the LOTWs ice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=u1H1uDxLVpE

Lucky if the ice will be off by the end of May!

If we get the snow predicted it'll be a very late ice out.

Record since when? Downward trend since when? What was the source of CO2 that caused deglatiation 20,000 years ago? Science has proven time and time again that orbital orientation and thus changes in energy received from the sun were and are the driving forces bahind any melt. Furthermore, when it comes to CO2, it has also been proven over and over, that CO2 levels were on the rise at the same time deglatiation occured. Must've been all of those hot rods snowmobiles that criss crossed the ice cap back then...

I can't really see how pollution is good for the environment or how all the pollution we create doesn't have an effect on things, that aside I just hope the ice is gone by July 4th when I visit MN. BR

I suppose now we can expect a Climate Compendium challenging Al Gore's views, eh?
Then we can find out exactly how cold it was during the last ice age, when Larry was just a young whippersnapper.

All in fun, Larry:)

all the while the Volcanoes can keep doing whatever they want to do and not be held accountable for anything. Can't we get a law passed that eliminates Volcanic Activity?!

Gotta say I'm surprised this thread hasn't been locked or the previous posts deleted as it's pretty much devolved into a political discussion with name calling. Wasn't there a thread that was frozen last week or the week before, about the guy from Hayward that Larry disagrees with, and it was anticipated there would be issues and that guy didn't read this forum anyway? Seems more innocent then what this thread has become and has the potential to become.

Still find it odd that man has impacted every aspect of the environment but not the climate.

why are there no posts a out global warming when it's 100 out?

Because then it is just a heat wave.

Ya gotta love everytime it gets cold and people make wise cracks at global warming. I'm pretty sure when a majority of the science community agree on a subject they have some good evidence to back it.

And I really think we should rally to stop plate tectonics.

I didn't see any name calling. But by all means, send it to the basement at some point.

I don't think anyone argues that pollution is 'good' for the environment, or that pollution cannot change 'things'. Just take a look at the paper industry. Since it has been nearly regulated out of business here in the US(because nobody uses it anymore right?), where it is produced with more caution to the environment than anywhere in the world, capacity has likewise grown in asia. At least the untreated wastewater from their process that flows into the rivers/ocean over there will never reach our shores, because we live in a bubble.

Reefer … what is the story with paper making in Finland? they are some of the leaders? no? anyway, are they losing their industry too, or is it still strong there. I'm in the Plastics Industry but seem to remember that the Fins were aggressive in buying up Paper Mills in the U.S.. I would imagine that Finland would have as strict or maybe more strict environmental regulations than we do? Curious …
