Balmy 17 degrees down here in N IL.

Got about a foot of snow on the ground, wind is supposed to start howling this afternoon, likely blowing it all back on my driveway. Forecast for the weekend calls for -19 on Sunday, high on Mon of -9. 25 MPH winds, wind chills down to -30.

Not that bad here in MN today. -4 and warming for once.

With -30 below temps coming right behind the warm front!

Yeah, when the governor cancels school statewide 3 days in advance you know something wicked this way comes.

6 years ago, January 2008, my friend and I were on a mission to a lake that was hard to access because of the water levels....the weather was just like it looks back home right now..cold as #*#*. I remember -50 wind chills and we were in a portable over 26' of water catching nice gils and they died off and the frost in the shack was so thick. All of a sudden we had marks at 16ft again and jigged back up. We ended up catching 4 of the biggest crappies I've seen. I think it was a fluke. It had nothing to do with the weather, but whiskey.

Quoting both of you here...

When you work with kids in the inner city, you would realize that many of them don't have coats, gloves, hats, etc...and they are the ones who DON'T have that nice pair of shoes for status, NOR the phone for status... Truly ones who don't have the $$. Have them stand at a bus stop for 15 minutes in the warmest things they have and frost bite is pretty much guaranteed. My building alone 91% of our students are on free and reduced lunch (meaning below poverty level).

This was done more to protect THOSE kids than those in suburbs or outstate who are more likely to have the means to bundle up, as the school district administrations of both Minneapolis and Saint Paul receive pressure from city officials to stay open. Governor made a good call today...
