Posts: 717 Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Guest - 3/23/2011 1:32 PM Bondy Baits are poured in Canada, with all the parts from the US, including the packaging. No overseas production. I listed Bondy Baits first, but pulled it off. It's American, (North American) but struggled with keeping it, since the thread said USA. Awesome bait, nonetheless, and Jon is terrific to deal with.

Geez, I didn't even think about packaging. I'm glad to see there are still some things made in the US. I'd like to buy some stuff that is exclusively made here, not to discredit any manufacturers that make products outside of the country

Posts: 469 Location: MN | Still is not clear to me: If some of the components are made outside of USA, but all the work are done in USA, Should the final product be considered as made in USA or what will be the best definition for such scenario ?

I would say no. I'd consider those Assembled in USA.

Posts: 469 Location: MN | I don't agree with "assembled in USA" I do all work here in USA from scratch: melt lead, make my own heads, paint and clear coat them, tied my own custom skirts, etc. Basically, I do full production cycle and only few of the used components are made somewhere else. It seems to me it's just more then assembling.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | psv, From my research on the subject a "widget" has to have "all or substantially all" of its components made in the USA and be assembled in the USA to carry that designation. Funny though as the FTC does not define the % needed to qualify. Sometimes you will see "Assembled in the USA" and most likely what that means is that parts were imported into the USA and final assembly here. In the past I knew of a few companies that actually import lures and then repackage in the USA. Over the last few years I have seen those companies put Made In China on the labels now. The FTC can levy heavy fines that woudl easily put a musky lure company out of business so I think most follow the rules today.

Where is the deadline between made in USA, assembled in USA, made in USA (some imported components) ??? I use Mustad as a main hook and some of the 3D eyes from Thailand. They simply are the best match (I did try a lot of staff before I stick with those 2) for my spinnerbaits. Rest of the components are from well known USA companies. Can I identify my product as Made i USA ? I even more confused now :))))

PSV In my opinion yes you qualify and fall into the “substantially all” category. It’s nearly impossible to claim something is 100% made here if you look deep enough. For example, if you look a little further into what I do you’ll find that the design software is from a French company, the computer used for design is a Dell with components from all over the world, the CNC machine for prototyping and mold-making is German, the molding press is Japanese, the ABS plastic is made here but with chemicals from throughout the world. The equipment and supplies used for painting are a mixed bag as well. Then I drive my American car (ahem…) to drop off the baits for shipping.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | I would agree with “substantially all” for you too psv. To me its more of an ethics question. If you can look at what you buy and its 80%+ COGS based on items made in the USA then you should not worry too much. I have heard of products with only 60% of the components made in the USA and they still can designate made in the USA but IMO that is getting pretty bad. The Made in the USA designation should be an honored stamp and respected. Fine if you want to make items out of the country but IMO props need to be given for those who keep the production here and can keep their business profitable.

concern the musky lures i think it's safe to say more than 80% of them are made in usa,for bass lures it's probably 20% such a big contrast.anyway usa don't mean better lure.look at the musky innovation co for example they made good lure that catch almost every giant year after year........

Posts: 149 | Madmanmusky - 3/23/2011 5:42 PM Musky Mayhem Tackle Made in the USA Heard their skirts are tied in Haiti and then shipped to the USA. Does that still count as made in the USA. Maybe so since skirts are a small part of the entire lure?
