" We'll come back and get her at prime time"
....when 3 of the 5 biggest fish of my life have been caught between 10:30 and 12:30 midday...hmmm...

Those seemingly odd mid-day times often yield a moonrise, moonset, or moon directly underfoot scenario.

"You need a big lure to catch a big fish" and "Big Muskies don't go shallow".

Truth is there are days when big lures are better, but some days the fish want something smaller - maybe even a Bass bait. And, depending on the lake structure, Big Muskies often use shallow water areas too.

firstsixfeet,

I think that "if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you always got" can also be said another way "Dont' expect better results if you keep doing the same thing".

I believe what Dick Pearson was refering to was people who kept doing the same thing with poor results thinking that their results would someday improve. I believe Dick was simply saying that if something isn't working, try something different. I know he believes, like most people, that being versatile is a key to catching fish.

We all know that if there are no fish on one spot, then try another. If one lure isn't moving any fish, then try another. If the fish aren't shallow, try deeper. I believe this is all Dick meant.

I do what I always do in certain areas, at certain times of the year, but I never really know what I am going to get. So, it must be untrue.

It is that simple.

If it was true, it wouldn't need special conditions.

You can't catch muskies while passed out drunk in the cabin.

"Winds from the east, fish bite the least".
On numerous ocassions, I have watched an east wind blow a storm in and the fish go absolutely ballistic suicidal just before that storm hits. I've also caught plenty of fish on bluebird days with east winds.

my grandpa always said that, and always added...
"Winds from the west, fishing is at its best"

Being told trolling is the only way to catch fish on a lake that 75% of my fish were caught casting.

firstsixfeet,

It sounds like you are using good presentations that produce at times. In that case, I agree that statement is not meant for you. The statement applies to the people who keep doing the same thing over and over and almost never have success. And there are a lot of those people fishing for Muskies. They always throw the same lure in the same spot and wonder why they don't catch anything.

But, are you really always doing the same thing? Think about it. Are you always putting your boat on the same track, fishing the same depth of water on each spot, and running your lures at the same depth and speed? Sometimes a change in speed can make a huge difference in how the fish respond. Sometimes letting the lure drop just a little is all it takes to trigger that strike. Sometimes a person changes things up and doesn't even realize it, but the fish do.

For a while last year I was having my best luck after work. Then I realized that I was reeling slower at night than in the morning when I was more rested. I then slowed down my lures in the morning and started catching fish then too. Funny how that works.

Hi Brian,

thanks much for that!! I believe it too!! I have 4 C3's that have worked really well for about the same amount of time. Preventative maintenance goes a long way!!

You can Tune a Piano, but you cannot tune a fish.

My good friend Steve says it clearly. What is the most important rule in Muskie angling?
There are no rules.

When is the best time to fish Muskies?
When you can.

"They're just hammering the muskies on Lake-X" ....

Usually hear this one after a long hard day with little action; dehydrated and sun-burned... not the best time for non-sense with me!

Personally using Dick's "philosophy" has helped me and others get out of a rut and put fish in the boat.

If you are on a week long trip to LOW for example, and after 3-4 days of pounding rocks when the "should" be there, but they aren't, what do you do? If you do the same thing you'll probably get the same relults.

Changing up has worked for us even when we were conviced we "knew" what we were doing.

Obviously if you use one lure the whole season you will catch fish on it sooner or later, you won't always have the same results. Realizing when what you are doing needs to change is a good thing.

Most infamous saying by a friend of mine., "they don't eat suckers in this lake, tried for years".

That day we caught 4 and lost 5 on meat. Ha Ha.

"Spinner baits and bucktails don't work in late fall."

With the exception of three days last year, CJs spinner baits were my best lures from opener until ice-up.

Topwaters only work during low light conditions. Or, I had a guy tell me this year that muskies never went deeper then 12ft below the surface.

Reply: "I got a 40..."

ME: "Well, there's nothing wrong with a 40 incher."
Reply: "No, 40 pounder!"

Was the brief convo I had on opening day while having lunch at a bar on the lake I was fishing. He wasn't kidding, over 50 inches and a whale at that - I believe his pictures were floating around on LL after that.

. . .Oh, I'm sorry, I missed the "common" part in the title.

Muskies- everything else is just bait

In a few years, those fish we released will all be 50 inches!

The Big ones all go way out to the middle of the lake in summertime.

"they'll go when this front moves in/the wind picks up/the sun gets a little lower/etc."

That's why I really like fishing with the gray haired old guides. There's no BS there -- they'll look at you and say "Seen days like this before. If they were gonna eat they'd have done it already. We can keep fishin' if you want, or we could just go get a beer..."

Once a musky grabs a sucker, they never let go! Dead musky dont float! Musky are afraid of the trolling motor! Musky are afraid of the boat! Musky are afraid of the steel leader! Should have been here yesterday! There's a thousand of them.
