2001 chevy tahoe, 2005 crestliner 1850 CMV, f150 yamaha. Pulls boat great with no more than 2mpg loss in high winds or extreme hilly conditions. 16mpg. I usually tow in overdrive and will only take it out when it is really hilly. Braking could be a little better but is tolerable, just plan ahead. no surge brakes on trailer.

Gets about 11.5 mpg with the cover off the boat and running up to 70mph on the 4-lanes. Goes up to 14.5 mpg with the cover on and mixing in more less than 60mph on the seconday roads. Averaged 14 with three guys and two weeks supplies on a 1800 mile trip to musky heaven this summer. Sure didn't want to drop all that cash at one time but the 1991 rig and 1996 truck both wore out to the point I no longer trusted them at the same time

2000 Dodge Durango 4x4 with the 5.2L. I'm towing a 2005 Lowe Roughneck 1860VT. Most of my towing is less than an hours worth and on rural roads with speeds in the 45-55mph range. One thing I've noticed that makes a huge difference is knowing when to turn OFF the overdrive. When towing at speeds under 50mph I find a big gain in towability, more power and better mileage. I don't turn it on until I get to a speed where my rpm's are going stay in the 1800-2000rpm area all the time. Depending on extra load, terrain and wind I'll get 14-17mpg at 50-55mpg towing like mentioned.

Currently: 2003 Grand Cherokee 4.0 towing a 14' 1970's mirrocraft getting 17-17.5 mpg around 65-68 mph.

I will be upgrading the boat to probably a Fishhawk/Navigator type deal in the 16.5-17.5' range. Anyone else with the same tow rig able to chime in on what to expect?

Highway mileage is better w/ the V8. I think a guy could get by w/ a V6 if he were fishing local.

Good luck w/ the new rig.

2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 L V6

SCmuskies - my Ranger is about 17 ft long and I am currently getting 15.4 MPG, but I tow the boat all season, every day. MPG has been as low as 13-14. I have had a ton of problems with my jeep (stalling for a year, computer chip malfunctions in the drive-train, batteries etc...) but it has finally been running well for the last 2 years. She's got 94,000 miles and in great condition.

And to what Hammskie said, I think a V8 would have been a better choice.

If the pics of your kids with Musky Shop sign in the background are cheesy then I'm guilty too...I think that's an awesome pic and in 10 years you are going to be so glad you have it...very cool

I messed this up a little.

Chas,

I used to tow my 680T with a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L V6 and had many many many problems with it... similar to what you mentioned. Now, I am towing the 680T with a 2006 Trailblazer and it works great. I am getting between 14-16 mpg towing.

Mine is a 1997 Dodge Ram, and a new to me (2 weeks ago) 1996 Ranger 681VS. Haven't pulled it enough to see the mileage yet, but I'm sure it will typical Dodge mileage.

Mak51,

Not to get too far off the subject....I had stalling problems for an entire year - had the car in and out of dealerships 4 times and no one could figure out what the %$$% was wrong! Then my buddy told me to look the web and search the problem - there were a lot of people complaining about a certain part...so I had the dealership replace it even though they did not want to and during the process, they found that the wires connected to the "certain part" had been worn and rubbing on a screw. Every bump shorted the engine out when the wire touched the screw.

Lone Stone, is that a 115 Merc on the back? Nice boat!

Chas,

Same story here, I had my Jeep in the shop all the time. I had less than 100k and my transmission was going out and the vehicle would stall out going up hills. I cannot tell you how happy I am to have the Trailblazer and not the Jeep.

Lone Stone, awesome looking rig!

I'm towing an Alumacraft 175 cs w/ Yamaha 115 four stroke. I've got a Chevy 1500 silverado. Plenty of power but I do miss my 2500 HD. I think that truck could have pulled my house.

cmartin...

Would this "certain part" be a TPS?

My Jeep has performed fine (150K on it). First vehicle out of college & I picked it up with around 93K on it around. I would like to have a V8, but that will come on my next vehicle, going to add a boat first.

cmartin, Mak51, thanks guys. It has a 125 Merc. on it, which seems to do pretty good the couple times I've had it out. Now I've got to sit and look at it in garage untill spring. I've wanted a Ranger all my life, I just always thought it would be a bass boat, untill I came down with the muskie disease. The timing wasn't perfect, but it was a good price and in VERY good shape. Just couldn't pass it up.

SC,

You would think I would remember the name the part when they finally fixed it! LOL honestly, TPS sounds familiar. Whatever it was called, I think I was some kind of computerized pump that was in sync with the pistons etc...? It was just a part that a lot of people were talking about on discussion boards so I gave it a try.

LS, I think one of the best things about Rangers, besides being a true workhorse, is that they hold their value after many years and owners. That says a lot.

One thing I will by adding to my 680T for next season is a set of Wave Wackers -anyone use this brand on your rig?

I've got a 1996 Chevy Silverado w/ 215,000 miles and a 1996 Champion 191DC w/ a 150 Merc EFI on the back. Just got the Champion this year, loved it more each time I fished out of it. Fish seem to like it too! Major upgrade from the 16' Alumacraft w/ a 40hp Johnson on the back! The truck needs to be replaced relatively soon but it's holding it's own for now. I was hoping to be in a 2500HD and a 620VS by now, but I guess I can't be too greedy at 27.

Boat is a 1977 Lund Guide series fibreglass, or a 2002 Fisher 12' , Ran up north with the 12' got almost 20mpg I am expecting the same with the 15' lund this year as 2 years ago I towed a 16' monarch around the vilas county area for a weekend and averaged almost 21mpg not bad.
