Posts: 1184 Location: Iowa Great Lakes | Spent Saturday 10/31 fishing with a new friend, bobbie from here on the site. Day started ff chilly with a temp of 32 at the launch and a West wind with a bite to it. Started off hitting spots we had been seeing fish, hitting the best one at prime time with no results. Decide to hit a shoreline known to hold fish but a spot that doesn't give them up easily. Got about halfway down the shoreline along the break, about to the point I have never seen a fish past. We decide to finish it out since nothing else has shown us anything. 1:59 pm, cast my mag dawg into waters I have never seen a fish in much less caught one, about half way through the retreive I pump the bait and theres nothing there, I swing the rod and fish on. 2pm fish in the net a pretty fall North West Iowa fish hitting the board at 42 even. Got a new friend and found another spot to hit on future trips, one of the best ways to spend a day on the water. Attachments ---------------- Picture 524.jpg (140KB - 106 downloads) | ||

Posts: 1 | Ok, one time, I beat the freeze. I stared it down and fished anyway. Over an inch of ice had buttoned the lake up for good. I might have given up, but I had an idea. I called my buddy Rick Mai (240 or so pounds) and put him in the bow of one of our resort boats. With a 9 horse, we made that boat into an aluminum ice breaker. We broke a path out to the edge of a secondary break and then did some doughnuts out there creating big enough waves to break the ice. We circled around and cleared enough space for a hole in the ice that was about 200 feet across. It took about an hour to do this. The noise and racket was incredible! I figured every fish for a mile would run from that sound. We dropped two suckers out in the hole and waited for a fish to find them. Two hours later we had line go out and a muskie running with the sucker. When I set the hook, the fish had run under the ice about 75 feet and I had to fight him back towards the hole. When the fish was netted, about 20 pounds of floating ice was with it. I put the fish in my big (110 quart) cooler with water and brought it back to shore for this photo. We broke some more ice and released it. It took off strong and I swore I would never do this again. It was just too much work. Well, I guess I'd do it for a 40 pounder.
