I'll have to agree with Peeler. Mike Lazarus is the best in the Business. He is the trolling master of the East. He is so much more advanced than everyone else in this muskie game it's utterly ridiculous. My two cents worth.

You don't have to have a TV show to qualify as one of the best Musky fisherman around. There are a lot of excellent Musky hunters that don't.

I'd pick Larry Ramsell---guide out of the Hayward, Wisconsin area. He's got a ton of knowledge and experience, and is a both professional and enjoyable to be in ther boat with for a day.

I don't think there IS a 'best'. There are MANY excellent Muskie anglers out there, some defined in part by where they fish...they are the 'best' on that water or waters that are similar. Some are defined by versatility, and ability to do well on any water at any given time. Some are well known through media, some not so much. On any given day any might outfish the others.

That said, I can't decide who's the 'best'. Mebbe FSF.

I'm guessing none of us know the greatest of all time if there is such a thing. Chances are this individual is so focused on catching fish he has no time for guiding, tournaments, boards, seminars or tv. He just catches fish and nobody knows it.

i've been in the boat with some i would consider among the best including:
Mark Lijewski
Brad Nelson
Cal Ritchie
Steve Jonesi
Kevin Cochran
Scott Kleinschmidt

all that said, the guy i've personally learned the most from has been Steve Herbeck and if i could spend a day on the water with anyone it would be Herbie on Eagle.

Tough if not impossible question. Any given day, any body of water, any one of 50 could outfish the field. Tough to compare fishermen between geographical locations. Is the guy who shoots more trophy whitetails on QDM in Buffalo County a better deer hunter than the guy who shoots basket 8's on public land?

As far as the best I've seen at being adaptable to different locations, pressure, and presentations would have to be Dan Wojtusik (sp?), Phil Schwiek, Steve Herbeck, and Mark Lijewski.

Scott Kieper. Not easy to choose a top stick without fishing with the person, so he's earned my respect on the water and that's why he gets the nod. The guy wakes up in the morning and pisses excellence. I've fished with Slamr- he wakes up in the morning and drips mediocrity! LOL (I kid, I kid!)

I'm with Mike-Kieper's attitude and passion make him the best in my opinion. I'm sure all of the others' mentioned are great sticks, but I've never witnessed anyone quite like THE KIEPER.

Hmm... I guess there have to be some variables established in order to call someone "the best". Taking overall knowledge of lakes (topographical and biological) and fish behaviors (relating to season, solunar, etc.) into account... then coupling that with flawless mechanics & execution, number of days on the water AND genuine humility...

Not sure if I can think of someone with all that... but that's what it would take... IMHO.

Nice topic... makes a guy think...

I think someone should tell Kieper that they have Dr's for his condition. I'm guessing that hurts.

There's a LOT of people I would like to fish with, many of them are excellent in their own right.

I've fished with several people that have been mentioned on this thread and there are some great ones. If I had to pick one it would probably be Joe Bucher.

Great waters make great fishermen! The guys who put in there time do their homework and fish their butts off are the best. That said there are so many great musky fishermen out there it's almost impossible to pick one "best" fishermen!

I forget his name at the moment, but this guy...the look on his face just means business!

I think he caught this one on a duck imitation.

I'd want to fish with Jesus. That day Peter and company were out and the boat not catching jack, and Jesus just looked at the water and the nets were loaded. Sorry, but he's got most beat.

As mentioned, "the best" is not really defineable. But I think most people would agree that when it comes to making a choice of who'd they'd like to spend some time with in a boat Musky fishing it's going to be based on what we prefer in personality types, and of course a respect for thier fishing knowledge.

James Lindner would be a top choice for me. He combines a lot of intelligent thinking to make good choices, and does a great job using his electronices to locate good structure. Just an overall good fisherman for knowledge and a good sense of humor.

Many of the best are guys not in the biz, just hard working folks. They don't do it for the show they just catch fish. For me I think I would like to spend a day with a guy in MN I know that does ok.

best is kind of a funny term...as others have said a guy like Lazarus might be the best on the body of water he fished doing the tactics he uses to put lots of 50's in the net, but take a fish out of water so to speak and how good will he do? adaptability on many types of waters from shield lakes, to lakes in MN/WI and throw in bodies of water like reservoirs and rivers . and see who can still boat fish...many guys are good at doing what they do over and over and over on the same body of water...get them on a new lake and how do they fare? "best" might to have "best on a specific body of water" added in...
I think guys like the Lindners are some of the most adaptable at finding and catching big fish...

The best? The guy that takes his kid(s) or other kids fishing and doesn't measure himself with other anglers by anything other than height...

I can't say they were the very best but Larry Latino and Tony Portincaso sort of jump out at me. I once asked a friend of mine how good they were and his response was: Nothin' special just daylight till darkers. They were both really Somthin' Special. Just ask Sworral.
