Posts: 84 | This is a great endeavour, thanks in advance. I'd like to hear the sound of various bucktails being 'burned' at a high speed one would expect to use. Edited by Old Guy 3/16/2008 5:33 PM

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | I'd like to hear what it sounds like when a guy walks around the boat, drops something on the floor of the boat, turns on the trolling motor, big motor, etc. I'm not sure I need to listen to every lure's sound, but it would be neat to get an idea how different styles of baits make different sounds. I'd also like to hear comparisons between different blade sizes and styles.

I would also like to hear any difference between identical blades (any size+style) that are left unpainted vs. painted. I always thought painted blades ran a bit quieter. On surface baits, unpainted steel fins seem louder and crisper sounding too.

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The hydrophone converts pressure waves into an electronic signal that is transmitted to the recording device, basically like a transducer. Fish definitely 'hear' using their octavo-lateralis system. Rudimentary inner ear, air bladder, and lateral line all are used to 'process' the pressure wave for the fish. I found a great link that does a great job describing the process: http://www.dosits.org/animals/produce/2f.htm So I'd say the short answer is yes, they hear and no, not exactly like we do, but hear none the less.

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Send me the lures you want recorded, and I'll post an Aqua Vu underwater video in color combined with an above the water video in color with the hydrophone audio track. Basically, the lures entire 'footprint'. You can use the embed code from upload.outdoorsfirst.com to post the clip anywhere.

esoxaddict - 4/9/2008 11:17 AM I'd expect it would be easier to do this after the ice melts. I assumed they were doing it in a pool since that is where the other tests were done. Do the indoor pools freeze in Wisconsin as well???????

Posts: 433 Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | Later on when the water is more liquid, I'd like to hear the difference between a boat moving at 3-4mph powered by the big motor vs the boat powered by the kicker at the same speed. Often wondered why it seemed sometimes fish hit with one sound and not the other.

Location: Athens, Ohio | No one has mentioned a rattle trap? I wonder if there is a difference in sound between the Bill Lewis 'trap and the Producer Tackle rattlin shad? And, of couse, I'd have to request a Sledge in action. thanks, Steve! m

Posts: 271 Location: davis,IL | Hate to be a pain Steve, but I, and many others I'm sure, would love to hear some of the bucktails. When I really got into Muskies, 30 some years ago as a kid, the #5 Mepps was top dog. Nowdays #10 blades seem to rule the roost, I've read about the deep thump of these blades, but I still wonder, are they that different in sound or is it just they move more water. Since most of us throw these fairly consistantly I would think this is a high priority on our list of lures to "hear". I know you have an endless list to test ( I read through the blog regularly). But help us poor bucktail guys out and answer this simple question! I'm really dying to "hear the difference"! Thanks, from a confused fisherman.

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Another thing on-the-water testing will do is indicate what the electric motor sounds like, water slapping on the hull, noise from the anglers and sonars, and more.

Posts: 62 Location: chicago | Steve, I remember seeing you about 7 years ago at Cave Run when you first did that.Funny how we thought 1 colorado would make a difference. What about speakers from a stereo on the boat. Would love to know if rockin on the boat would be dentrimental to spookin them.
