That's a big fish. Small bait too, DRaider's what, eight inches? I find that as interesting as anything. There's water that puts out fish of that caliber every season, one in 2006, one in '89 and one in the '70's puts the 'no big fish in this state' idea into perspective. WI might have some big ones, but three over a three decade span certainly isn't something that sets it apart from anywhere else. Bucher's Crankbait Secrets book is a great resource, and there are lots of pics of Gelb with other great fish. Most of them are the same, real late fall, real big and caught trolling.

Very sweet! Congrat's Tom! What a PIG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With the wind it was freakin' cold fishing down here on the WI River. I imagine rowing helps to keep you warmer. But I'll bet all thoughts of cold very quickly vanished from Tom's brain when he tied into that beastie.

thats why we crazy SOB's fish in crap weather, freeze our butts off, and endure some nasty stuff till the bitter end. Thats what dreams are made of!!!!! It sucks he was by himself and couldnt have taken pics and released, but, I don't think many guys can say they released a 50lber, so they really can't say he was wrong for thumpin this one.
congratulations on catching a bruiser! I think a guy can die happy catching a fish like that.

that is one big fish! I can't fault him for keeping it as that is his choice for sure. (though I wish it was still swimming) He has done alot for the musky world over his lifetime.

My buddy and I were fishing this past June. He was throwing a jackpot when the largest fish we've seen comes out the water and missed the lure. The splash was like from an old war movie when they trow the depth charges! We were fishing about 100 yards from Tom's place over the soon to be famous weed beds that are found on this section of the lake..

Way to go Tom - I wonder if it was the same fish....

For all of the 100's and 100's of musky that you have caught, and released, you deserve this one. A true once in a lifetime opportunity, and fish. There is no one more knowledgable or experienced out there. NO ONE. I vote we change the bait name to the GELBTAIL. Thanks for being there when I caught my first (little) musky, and for convincing me to let her go.

1st vote for the GELBTAIL Lure.

Great fish, Tom!

Rick, did you get a mold of that behemouth? How about the age? Any idea? I would say that is a relatively young fish, as it has a rather samll head compared to it's huge body! Bet she left a lot of young'uns in the lake, carrying those genes!

Awesome accomplishment. Congrats again.

That's the fish of a lifetime right there!!

Congratulations!!

I just have one question:

If that's an empty belly, what would it have looked like after a meal?!

WOW!!!!!! That dude has been on the late season slobs for many years now. He finally cracked the fish of his dreams, after quite possibly releasing it a time or two in prior years. Sure glad he caught it, as I just don't need that type of taxidermy bill during the holidays.... and you would have heard the thump all the way to MN. We hit the river one last time ourselves from sun up to sun down hoping for the dream fish, but came up short. Braving the elements were not fun yesterday and a big heater in the boat didn't help much. I am even more proud of Tom, knowing the conditions he dealt with to stick that pig yesterday. Way to go on the first true 50lber in WI in decades(wasn't the fish from High Falls flowage in Marinette Co the last one?).

Rowing up a 50lber the last day of the WI season in the bitter cold on a H. D. lure... Wow! Tom, you just leapfrogged up near the top of my personal list of muskie heroes (you were already on the list BTW).

For your efforts I wrote a short poem to help you commemorate this historic event: "$hit it's cold". I don't know why I thought you'd like that... I just thought you would:)

How do you row troll a depth raider? Im from MN and we are allowed to troll - Im just not familiar with the term.

I cant imagine you would get it to dive very deep by oaring. - or do you use this in current.

-Any info would help my pea brain understand
-thanx

I'm no expert, but if it were me on deep water like North Twin, I'd use a weighted countdown, let it sink then start rowing.

Imagine what that thing would weigh if it had just eaten a 30" walleye or pike.

Monster says it all.

If you have a rowing boat (made to row & looking more like a canoe than a v-hull) you can get going pretty fast. You say you can troll in MN, at what speed do you? That boat he has can do that easily (3 to 5 mph). As far as getting that H-D DR deep? I don't thing Tom said he caught it deep. Besides he could have been using wire line which will get you twice as deep as the braided line. Who knows. You'll have to weight for the information to come all out.

Now THAT was a good one. LOL! Nice pig. The DR's are definitely deadly in cold water!

Wow !

What a great fish and even more impressive is the fact he successfully managed the net job on that monster by himself !

With the increase in "superfish" being caught I think we are sometimes easily lulled into forgetting how RARE A TRUE 50 POUND FISH IS to be seen - MUCH LESS CAUGHT !

Congratulations !
