Use artificials (Im still seeing fish on them in late Oct), cheaper and better for releasing the fish anyway.

If artificials are better for releasing fish, then you are using live bait wrong.

that's my point. I see people using them "wrong" all the time. Small sucker, single hook waiting for the fish to swallow and deep hook... And Id like to think you can still catch fish on lures very late into the season.

I would venture to say that 99% of the guys reading this site do not fish suckers the way you explained.

Fair enough. Obviously suckers work, and if used correctly, do no more harm to fish then lures... I just wish I didn't have to see people, on Lake Harriet for example, year after year catching them off the docks with suckers. Where Ive witnessed on more than one occassion the line going all the way into the stomach of the fish, after letting the fish "take" the sucker.

we watched some clowns this weekend let a fish have a sucker no less than 6 minutes before setting the hook. Bad part of sucker fishing is everyone thinks they're a musky fisherman in the fall and do things incorrectly.

You can catch muskies late in the year without suckers. You can catch many more using them. The amount of money we spend on musky fishing are suckers really going to break you? I fished 3 days last week. Caught a small one casting, two follows. Partners 0 follows. Suckers 1 for 6 and a nice pike. 2 lost at the boat. Guides in minnesota drift with suckers in november. Does Brad post a pic of a giant on an uncertified bump board?:-) probably not. It is pretty obvious what is the productive choice.

yah I get a kick out of these threads every year, most guys have well into the 100s of baits that they have never caught a fish on...but b*tch about a 8 to 12 sucker... we spent about 140 bux in suckers last weekend...but also boated 6 fish with a 51" average... yah, don't buy suckers! keep buying 40 dollar bucktails, 50 dollar topwaters, 90 dollar cranks, and 150 dollar jerkbaits. real smart.

The difference is a lure lasts you years,,I've never lost a floating topwater ever. Don't like a lure you buy sell it, swap it, I don't see any "used" suckers on the current M1st trade board,,, A sucker lasts part of or one day.
Suckers work much better in late fall especially when the water temps fall past 55 no argument with that,,but I want to fool the fish not feed them what they want with a hook attached I don't really see any triggering skill in that. To each his own.

yes to each their own.. but casting out a double 10 and simply reeling it in isn't exactly hard to do either is it?... nor is putting a lure 50 feet behind the boat and driving around..... you're also telling us that a fish can decipher that a lure isn't real and a sucker is...? wrong. while I do see your point, catching a fish is catching a fish. plenty of skunkless days fishing w suckers to know it's not a guarantee.

If your pro or con about suckers it doesn't matter on what's maybe the most humorous thing in musky fishing,,
Watching a guy rig up his sucker then see it get casted off on his first cast, I grew up in south Minneapolis and I still learn a bunch of new swear words when that happens

Anyone who feels there's little skill displayed in fishing live bait for muskies needs to spend a day on Eagle in late October with Herbie. We worked our tails off throwing rubber and cranks and caught/lost an even number on lures and live bait. Just another way to catch a muskie, no more harm to the fish with Herbie's rig than a crank bait or swimbait, and one heck of a lot of fun. and it works when everything in the boat is icing up. Never had a rip trolling, but that had been really effective for him a couple days earlier.

One fish (a 47) hit Dave's lure and got off, swung around and hit a sucker and I missed it, made a heck of an attempt at a TI swimbait, swung back around and hit a sucker and was boated. Another gave us fits (big blondie) following and harrassing the sucker and didn't hit. I caught the ugliest muskie I have ever boated on a sucker. Poor thing looked like it had been drug around by a truck, had light monofilament literally grown into it's body, and was so scarred up I was amazed it was so scrappy. Dave had a low 40" class fish smash a dawg and jump HARD into the side of the boat, knocking the lure out.

Fun trip, shortened by a real, honest, no kidding 12 hour blizzard.

I agree whole-heartedly with Steve on this. I have not fished with Herbie, but I do know there is a lot more to sucker fishing than throwing one on a quick-strike rig, under a bobber, 15' behind the boat.

There is alot more to all of it. You can go to a sport show, get your lotw map marked with a bunch of good spots, buy the baits that catch fish there, go at the right time and get your ass handed to you while a good fisherman might light it up. Happens all the time on our club outings up there. The good fisherman typically put 20+ fish in the boat while others skunk for the week. It is that way with every aspect of this sport if in fact we are atheletes.:-)

I'd love to be considered an athlete ill go with that

But,,I've yet to see a musky guy do jumping jacks, push ups and wind sprints at the boat landing before heading out.

I was moving pretty good before, during, and after the day on the water just to keep warm. If it was that cold all the time I'd be much more fit....

R&M in Eagle River was $8 for medium and $10 for large... Rays Landing in St Germain is the same..... I personally choose not to spend that on suckers, its ridiculous.... dusted off my fuzzy duzzit and am catching the same amount of fish as in the past... my $10 went to a bottle of Aleve as working the Fuzzy duzzit for a few hours and you need them!

With all due respect, there's more to trolling than "putting a lure 50 feet behind the boat and driving around" as I'm sure you're aware. As TM says, there is a lot more to all of it.

is there? we can dumb down any tactic if we want. a guy can go out and do exactly as I described and catch a fish...and that is my point...to do any of the tactics well, it takes skill. can a guy go out dunk a sucker and catch A fish...sure, but the guys that do any of the tactics well will catch multiple fish.... I know guys that are very good trollers, well if I trolled the same body of water as they do, I have zero doubt they would kick my butt and catch more... guys that think sucker fish is 'easy', well, yes, in all honesty casting, trolling, and sucker fishing are 'easy'. but anyone that doesn't do any of the tactics will find out, it takes a lot of skill to do any of them well and catch lots of fish.... that is the point...
