Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | 2011 was a great year for family , friends and fishing. I hope 2012 is the same. You guys have been making some incredible lures! It is making excited about building again! Hope to clean-up the shop this weekend and start building again. All the walleyes that we keep don't go to waste. Here is some pics from a holiday party we had last week. Walleye cheek chowder and yellow perch roll-ups! I also attached a cool pic of a calm night bite fishing right out front the Rock -N-Roll Hall of Fame. Our sports teams in Cleveland aren't doing well but the walleye fishing is world class! The scary thing is that I started following the packers this year. I am giving up on my browns for now. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Respect, I hear what you are saying. Lake Erie has a population I believe around 18 million walleyes,I could be off a million or two. The water is not as bad as people think. There was an issue with a green algea this past summer due to the heavy constant rains we had all summer. This caused extra nitrates (fertilizer) to wash from farmers fields making it extra prime for its growth. With the introduction of invasive species such as gobies, zebra muscles, & water fleas Lake Erie has been under attack constantly with these problems. Now I am hearing of a new invasive crawfish. It is funny how mother nature tries to make the adjustment for these problems. The zebra muscles are starting to make the water super clean as a large filter. The water is cleaner than ever but I think at a cost that I will mention a little later. This has allowed weed growth in deeper water. Gobies are now a favorite food of smallmouth and other species. Ohio has done a great job turning around its water resources. I admitt we don't have the pristine waters like up North but it is not as bad as you think. Walleyes...... This has been a highly debated topic on Ohio forums. Lake Erie has big fish, lots of them. We hold many major tournaments on this body of water, many are around or just after the spawn. All those fish are brought back to the scales in the name of competition. I am excited to hear that AIM just signed a contract to fish out of Lorian this year. I am interested watching that format and considering to fish it as a co-angler. Pictures are taken and the fish are released. I fish out of the Central basin where the water is deeper than out West, as the fish move East I follow them to the PA line. This time of year we are going out 14 to 18 miles out on Lake Erie. Every wind direction can affect you with 4 to 6 foot waves very common. Being a weekend warrior that can only fish in limited times and at the mercy of the weather/winds I try to keep fish when I can. The fish we keep in the summer are 4 to 10 pounds with most of the them in the 5 to 7 pound range. You do not catch 2 and 3 pounders, they just aren't there. So pretty much saying all the boats fishing in the summer on my side of town are catching the same sized fish. The funny thing is that all of these fish are females! The progressive pattern of the walleye migration is move from the West to East after spawn. For the most part the males (the 2 to 3 pounders) stay to the West side of the Lake towards the Lake Erie islands, 60-90 plus miles from me. As fall approaches........ The walleyes that we have caught all summer many miles out start to move back to the West as the water cools and the bait starts to move in to the shoreline. Eventually the same fish that I have been catching all summer end up right in front of Cleveland but much fatter. The same 6 to 8 pound summer fish are now 9-1/2 to 11 pounds. Most the fish in the pictures are 27-1/2 to 29" long only. So the point I am making is what is the difference if you catch a female in the summer or the fall? The fish is still taken out of the system. I am very carefull how I clean the fish. I do not keep the belly meat I trim all the fat and dark area's off the fillet. It is nice to catch the fish so close to the shore and not dropping the 100 dollars in gas. The fall window is very small and mother nature can shut it down for the season in one day with a line of Alberta clippers. I keep the fish I can and actually I release many fall fish that aren't mentioned. I have listened to many biologist have found that the prime spawners are not the large fish. This is why many states have the slot limits keeping the prime spawners in the mid-sized range protected. My biggest fear......... I love to perch fish. What I am finding alarming is that the perch are learning to use the zebra muscles as a food source. Many fish I caught this year were coughing up piles of shells of the zebra's. This concerns me that any pollutants still left in the water will be concentrated in the flesh of the clams and injested by the perch passing it on to the consumer. I have the highest respect for any fish species. Lake Erie is an amazing resource that I am lucky to have in my backyard. I am a strong believer in catch and release for the musky's at any size but the walleyes taste to good. John

Posts: 77 | 1-2 pound fish are not of keeping size on Lake Erie. 15 inch minimum, which weighs about 2.5 lbs (i understand you were trying to make a point). 6-8lb fish are the dominating size class of the lake of the 18 million. So if you are looking for "eater's" you might be there a while. P.S. Tigger catches and releases his share of the fish.

Nice job. I can't wait till you post some pictures of monster fish caught on those hammers! Joe I hope all is well. I can't tell how many times my knuckles have hit the sanding belt. Two months ago I sanded 1/2 my thumbnail off is a second with a fresh belt, that hurt. It took three weeks for that to skin over.

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Muskyslayer, the smallest shads are 2-1/2" , the medium are 3-1/2" long and the large shad is 6" long. This is a 6" shad that I finished yesterday along with some spinner baits. The I tried to do a saltwater bunker bait fish. I guess they are similar to freshwater shads. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | I was looking to try something different to get me back into the shop and decided to try an idea I was playing around in my head for a couple of years. I have noticed some people putting fiber optics in some pre-made rapala products as the fishes eyes but I wanted to take it a step further. I drilled some of the holes in at angles through the body to catch the light at different angles. In low light conditions it looks like the body has LED lights in it.
