In April of 1963, I caught a 34 incher on a Heddon Torpedo, in the South Fork of the Hughes River, Ritchie Co., WV., using a Pflueger Supreme direct drive reel, on a 5 ft. Shakespeare glass rod. In April of 2013 I am going to try to recreate the event as I have all of the original equipment..may need a new muskie..

It was from the old mans tackle fishing 3rd river from the old wooden bridge. Old man is gone, guess that makes me the old man now. I still have the lure, here is a picture. It had a hook on the end that has rusted away. Sorry about the piece of wire in the picture.

Double 10 bucktail with silver blades and black skirt. Not a shock for color but just one that has worked so well. Hard to forget the ones that seem to catch fish during both good and bad weeks on the water.

I caught my first muskie recently on a baby cowgirl!

This was probably my fourth time out fishing for muskie. I was fishing a local river early, casting with a storm flat stick. I saw a big fin protrude from some shallow water behind where I was fishing. I thought it might have been a carp, but I made a cast in that direction and got my first follow from a nice muskie. I tried to do a figure eight but in hind sight it was probably terrible. I'll need to practice that for sure.

I made many more casts in the vicinity of the follow. Since my lure was getting fouled with weeds I switched lures--baby cow girl in black and nickel.

I made many more casts and was about to move on. I said "One more cast." Casting farther than I wanted put me in a very shallow area. I thought I'd get snagged in the weeds so I started reeling as fast as I could as soon as the lure hit the water.

About halfway back to the canoe, this fish blew my baby cowgirl up! When I set the hook, the fish immediately went air born! The fish seemed enormous! After a short but intense fight, I managed to net it myself without incident. Luckily there was another fisherman nearby who was able to take a photo for me before I released the fish. I'll never forget this experience--I'm definitely hooked on muskie fishing!

I have never actually caught a musky on a musky bait. This is my second year trying.

7.5" jointed Grandma bait (white belly perch) on a figure 8. Little spud at 27.5" but being that I was in middle school, it was pretty awesome at the time!

Caught my first this summer, 48" on a TrueGlide Rumor. Followed it up with a 49.5" three weeks later on a hardhead. Now what? Fifty baby! And it will probably take the rest of my life...

Both tiger and real by accident. 36" tiger on a pounded copper spoon. The spoon was tiny, too. Maybe 2-2 1/2" long. First real was 39" on a mepps aglia 5, brown skirt, red and white on gold blade. Stock number B5ST G/RW-BR. Lol

The Summer of 75 on the Niagara River. The old man took a Pike Chub and put a bigger hook on the back, bent the lip on each side with pliers and said try this, it will give it a different action. It worked. Priceless!
