The funny thing is that if you asked me to paint a simple stripe pattern it will take me days................... are the lines straight? Is the spacing right? Are the bars to wide? ......... LOL ........... I lock up on that kind of thing. I never had any art classes in school. I am sure there are better techniques to do cetain things. Rick James............. I smile when ever I see your name. I quess it is the association to "Super Freak" It just makes me smile. I do make my own bodies. That is one of my favorite things to do. I was a cabinetmaker for 25 years specializing in the wood stuff. I really enjoyed making things with my hands. They moved me into project management. I am not on the shop floor anymore. The time I get go into my wood shop at home is even more charished. I am excited about a current project I have going on. It is a restoration of a historical building in downtown Cleveland. All the wood is mahogany. I pulled some of the scraps out of the burn boxes and have been tinkering with it. Man is it a nice wood to work with. I hope to have some neat stuff soon. I have been experimenting with some new body styles. You may get a kick out of this piece I did a while back. I have it in one of the rooms in my house. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | I know this is a musky site but I bet there are some guys that fish walleyes also. I thought you may get a kick out of these. I started to tinker with these last year. I am a super die hard walleye guy. I have converted to the worm harness bite through the summer. There is always that transition period when the walleye shift to the hard body bite in the fall. This always drove me nuts! Worms or cranks? I always felt I may miss some good fish not running one or the other. Anyhow I started to play with making bodies that replace the beads of a worm harness. I fished alot of tournaments last year and was not a good time to start to play with other things. This year I cut back on the tournaments and had a chance to really play around with some of the projects that I started. Lake Erie walleye migration goes from the West side to the East during the summer and then reverses itself in the late summer through fall. On the return the fish are feeding heavy to prepare for winter and egg developement for the remales. They have followed the smelt around all summer long in the deep wqter summer months. I tried to make the bodies smelt like. Two weeks ago I ran them and had some very good luck. I went today and caught a 10.3 pounder and couple of 8's on them. I also caught an 8.5 pounder on a salamander pattern two weeks ago. Here are some pictures of the fish I caught. There are different patterns I was playing around with. I am seeing some colors that they like. The rig looks very ugly. I thought they would never hit it. With a good size crawler on it's almost 12 inches long. I did notice the one day I kept loosing fish that I hooked up with. I figured it out. They were t-boning the body and not hitting the worm. They were very aggressive that day. I am working on that. Today I went out by myself. I got my limit of fish (6). The weights today were 10.3 lbs (30-1/8" long), 9.1 , 8.25 , 8.1 , 7.75 and 5.7. It was a special day that I hit an active pod of big fish that were hungry. I had a double header on of the 10.3 pounder and 9.1 pounder to start the day. I have a picture that I took of the rod in hand ended up being the 9.1 (it was still 68 foot straight down under the boat) and later landed the 10.3 on the board going back over the motor. I use 10 pound mono............ They were great fights with 50 foot runs at times. Here are some pictures I took over the last couple of weeks and the nice cooler from today. I hope to get up to New York for the salmon in the couple of weeks. I called my friends that went up this weekend. They were catching some nice one this morning. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Pikie I do really like the walleyes. The fall night bite is around the corner. I hope to try some new stuff with some different actions. I am going to also try some new untapped walleye spots that I have been thinking about for years. Matt, I have only been tinkering with Ebay at times. I go thru phases when I feel like making the baits and phases when I can't even stand to look at one. Many people ask me to do custom orders but when I do think of doing that it then feels like a job. I really like to work on what ever I feel like working on at that moment. My little shop in the basement has hundreds of different things started and hanging there. I will walk downstairs and look around at something that catches my eye that day ands start to tinker. I know many people that tell me I am sitting on a gold mine. I guess I am not sure where to go next with it. I have thought of approaching some major lure manufactures to ask if they needed someone in research & developement or something along those lines. Of coarse I would have to do the field testing also! Here were a couple of other fish I caught yesterday on some homemade shad crankbaits. Sorry about the one picture of the fish. I must have hit a button on the camera setting. The one on the orange shad was almost 7 lbs. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | MuskyFix............ The layering does give the deep detail affect but it is alot of work. There are times I am thinking is it worth all the trouble. The muskies don't care. Well we are doing a job out of African Mahogany at work at the moment. I saved some pieces from the burn scrap pile. I made up some 9" long by 1" thick bodies. Man is the mahongany nice to work with. I did a perch , sucker , and walleye. 8/0 hooks , 1/4" thick lexan lip. I was nice to give the resin bodies a break and work with wood. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | I had a bonus this morning. The weather settled down on Lake Erie. I made an 1-1/2 hour drive to Huron to try catch the fish on their way back to Sandusky for the winter. The first ten minutes I caught this nice 9-1/2 pounder on a smelt bait that I made. It was painted in a Char. squirel pattern. Not sure why they call it a squirel pattern? LOL It ended up being on the only fish I caught today. It was still worth it after not being able to fish the lake for the last 2-1/2 weeks. I got home in time to watch the Browns get knocked around by the Steelers. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Hey everyone, I hope all is well with you and your families. Our newest daughter that we adopted from China is settling into a nice pattern and things are getting back to normal. She will be two this year. Hard to believe it is coming up on a year since we traveled to China to pick her up. I got to go and spend a day at the Chicago Musky Show this past weekend. I really enjoyed talking to everyone. Always a pleasure to talk to Joe and Duff at the Trueglide booth. They some INCREDIBLE lures!!!!!!!!!!! Man it starts to get you excited about the upcoming fishing season and making lures. I wish the drive wasn't so long from Cleveland. I wish I could have talked a little more to Larry Dalhberg. He had alot of people in front of his booth. It has been a while since I posted some stuff. I got to do some fall night bite walleyes in front of Cleveland. I pulled out an old lure that I made years ago out of retirement. It needed some patch work but still had some mojo left. I got a nice 11.25 pounder on it! I played around with other body styles in a smaller minnow body. I got some fish that would not come higher than 8 foot from the surface. I normally don't run the deeper divers because the fish come up in the top 3 foot of water. They got hung up that night so I decided to meet them at their level. I was suprised it worked.

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | I tried a new body style out of the mahogany for some shad baits. I had a bunch of 1/2" thick cut offs. I tried oversized glass eyes to see how they would look. I think they gave the baits a more of a swimming action some how. Maybe like blowing a match out that is on the other side of a bottle. It stream lines the water along the bait. They are 6 inch long. I finished one last night that I did foil on its side and smaller eyes. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Just some little shads I finished tonight. They are like little Perrywinkles. They are a mini version of my Rhino's. They are 4" long and have glass eyes. They will dive to 15 feet with no problem. They are solid resin. I hope to play around with this body style this summer for muskies and walleyes! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Well messing around with some shads. I should just cut to the chase and make a mold of a live one but it is more fun trying to make one from scratch. I made the head more blunt and moved the lip down under the gills more. It gave the bait a more natural look. It is a solid resin body that is 4-1/2" long and has handpainted glass eyes. I hope to find some open water soon to try it out. I have a friend that owns the local bait shop in my area and fishes the FLW bass tour. He has a tournament in March at Lake Norman. He asked if I could make a little shad glider that he could throw in shallow water in 5 foot or less. He wanted something with a little flash in a natural shad pattern. I made it this weekend. I used a mylar film under the epoxy to give the bait a pearly look. The bait changes colors as you turn it. I love this bait. I don't want to give it him! LOL It is 2.2 ounces and is a very slow sinker. I hope this will work for him. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Knooter it is just a fancy wrapping paper from the party supply store. You can take wrapping paper bows and pull them apart and glue them to the bodies. I will see if I can find an old walleye lure that I made four years ago with similar stuff. I has many many teeth marks on it now.
