After a week of almost nobody casting, we have several groups in starting today. Despite the lack of effort and numbers of people fishing, still had 49, 46 and 45 inchers caught last week.

Perch pattern Shallow invader for 2 of those fish on rock structure and a double 10 for the other after letting it rest for 30 mins after it charged the same bait the first time. Bunch of other baits thrown back to her when they returned before the same bait that brought it out the first time did the trick.

Water temps mid to high 60s.

Water clarity is suspect ..more so out to the west than closer to the resort and eastwards.

Lots of up and down weather the past week, but walleye bite held pretty steady.

Should be able to get more pattern info starting in the next day or so.

Sure wish I was fishing instead of posting. It's good to be busy in this industry though.

All the best to those hitting the lake this month. Keep us posted on what you see!

Any more updates from people who are/were fishing up there? Are they starting to move from spawning locations? Water temps seem low still. Any other news, ect?

Hiya,

Up here right now, but a ways west of Mylie's. Water is very high...every beaver lodge we've come across is under 2 feet of water.
Weeds are up in places that have normally had them. Finding cabbage out to about 8 feet deep in some areas. Weeds are clean and fishable. Pencil reeds are in deep enough to fish as well.

After a full day yesterday, I'm at a loss to a point. Fished some of everything and nothing of a pattern is showing itself. Wife and I had 2 hits and 2 follows... All dinky though. Nothing over 35 inches. Caught one nice pike yesterday on a believer.

From my experiences up here, I feel slow is an understatement.

Cloudy and warmer today with a south wind... We will see what happens today once my wife gets up...

Water clarity out west wasn't bad... Muddied in some spots but not many.

Steve

Steve, I was up over the 4th and it was primarily a pin reed bite. They had just started showing up on a couple rock spots the last day, but most were still in the reeds close by the rocks we'd typically fish. Bucktails (single bladed silver and black Harasser moved a lot of fish one day, black/silver showgirl and Shumway Flasher caught fish, double 8's worked), top raiders and a 10" weagle all worked for us.

Day 2: fished north of the angle, but not all the way to big narrows. Same as yesterday for me... Not much for fish. Two follows into the 8 but would not commit. One was a dink the other was roughly 41 inches. Went back on the 41, and did not raise it again. Small one up on a Bobbie, large one up on cowgirl jr.

Both fish were on wind blown points not far from bay's if assume they'd spawn in.

Speaking of wind... Does anyone want to deliver me a 21 foot fiberglass rig? Tough getting around in 20+ mph winds in a 17 foot aluminum.

Keep the updates coming, even as incredibly depressing as they are. I will be fishing the angle on the 15th-21st. My expectations for my very first Musky trip keep lowering and lowering. So it sounds like we are nowhere near the summer peak of typical year and smaller baits are still in order. Any other advice would be helpful in this atypical year.

If it's true that the fish were still spawning a week ago on LOTW, Kakagi, Rowan, etc (which is crazy) and you are only seeing dinks...you need to check for a suspended bite. The big girls after spawning will sometimes spend about 10 days to 2 weeks suspended while they recover. Yeah, it aint easy, but the locations are fairly predictable and if you mark baitfish...even better.

They were in transition over the 4th. Water temps leveled off at 67-68 while I was up. Shouldn't be an issue any more...

Gas was 4.46 at Youngs, 5.13 at flag

As in transition out of the spawning areas? We'll be up there the 19th - 26, so can I remain optimistic that we'll be past the recuperation period?

Day 3:

Ufda!!!! Rough day out there. Wife got up early (for her) and on the water at 7:50 this morning. Tried following up on points leading out of spawning areas with no luck today. Didn't even get a follow out of the deal. Tried some main lake rocks as well (again near spawning bays) to no avail.... managed a northern and a smallie for the effort.

Since that didn't pan out, we tried moving to a sheltered bay with cabbage, no luck moving through that either. Fished spinnerbaits and jerkbaits through the thicker stuff to no avail, tried outer edges with no luck either.

Had a creel survey boat stop by to take our information, and I asked them what their surveys have been coming up with.... All are maybe seeing 3 to 4 fish a day (those targeting muskies) and maybe getting one in the boat.

Stayed out until the wind picked up as the front moved closer and oh boy did it blow... had a surge of water come in as the front approached and we watched the wind switch from the southwest to the west to the northwest in a matter of about 10 minutes. Young's bay was solid whitecaps until the rain came in. Watched a few boats coming in that were caught out in the stuff and I definitely did not envy them being out there...it was rough as it was for us with 15 mph winds. Temps dropped from 74 to 59 in short order as well. All cleared off for the evening, but the wind is still blowing fairly well out there.

Cold front in play now, so into the weeds I will go tomorrow, given the wind is not too high. Predictions are to be up around 15 to 25 tomorrow again.

I honestly think things are just shut down to to weather and high water... I'm running out of tricks to try....

Water temps today were anywhere from 67 to 69 depending on whether or not wind was moving the water around... wave action has the higher temps...

3 days to go... Hoping something will decide to come up and say hello...

Transition as in mostly dinks left in spawning areas, some nicer fish showing up near traditional summer rock spots, not on the rocks but hanging in the reeds nearby. Nothing out on the reefs for us over the 4th.

Day 4:

Went out for about 2 hours in 17 - 20 mph winds to fish some lee sides of islands. Managed a small northern and wife managed a really small northern and a walleye. Both of us were fishing spinnerbaits up tight to shore.

Was not bad fishing the lee sides of islands, but getting to and from those places was not very fun....then the rain came in as well. Temps never got above 55 degrees. Water temps dropped to 65 and will continue to drop in these conditions.

Day 5:

Woke up to 25 mph winds from then northwest.. I'm thinking the good Lord has decided we need to give the fish a break this year and is protecting them with nasty conditions. I'm not old by any means being in my early 40's, but beating myself up out there is not something my body can handle as much anymore... Doubtful on getting out there today as there is a certain safety factor as well.... Maybe I'll get lucky and the wind will settle a little and I can get out on some lee sides again. Not crossing my fingers, though..

Son and grandson did well their first week 6/28 thru 7/4, and I joined them 7/6 thru 7/10. They wrapped it up End of 7/11. Second week was slow and no bigger fish. 1st week the biggest was 48x20. For the trip they caught 17, but mostly small Muskies. Grandson had a bad trip on losing big fish or it would have been much better. Lot of bad luck like me losing a Musky when my reel fried giving the fish Slack to get off. One of those trips that should have been much better than results shown.

Have been out several times between winds and rain storms.Last saturday it was flat calm for about 5 hours and moved some nice fish on reefs, but caught them in shallow rock with reeds next to them.Still in spawn areas.Lots of small males hanging around, but have found big girls on rocks connected to points or islands.Cold front and winds have slowed me down to watching tv or yard work, but back out tomorrow. Great Reports Everyone!

Been super busy here at the resort with all this high water and the usual craziness of a full camp change-overs the last couple Saturdays.

Hoping the good ole days are about to start! After a nasty front moved through the area Saturday night, it left cold temps and wind for two days (Sun/Mon.) Fishing was expectedly tough, but there have been some nice fish seen/caught. Bucktails have been reported by a couple friends as being the ticket to their big fish action.

Water temps had gotten up into low and middle 70s prior to the weekend and held at 70 overnight for the first time this season. The cold front over the weekend has them back into the mid 60s in the mornings. Stable weather in the forecast until Saturday should bring things into focus pattern-wise the next couple days. Surface temps will come back up and stay there for the week assuming the forecast holds.

Should be a good time for bucktails and low light topwater action, but have to wait and see what the reports indicate. We have mostly walleye anglers in this week, but a few boats out there chasing the big girls.

If I can make it out Thursday, it will be the first time in 3 weeks.

Gas prices came down last week from our supplier for the first time this season, but as always, gas will be more than you pay at the pumps at home. Nobody is getting rich selling gas up here. The costs to maintain a dispensing system to the ever-changing codes alone can be significant. Every dollar of support helps and we thank all of our guests for choosing to buy whatever gas you need over and above your full tank on arrival. That support means the world to us.

Good luck to all those on the water in our neck of the woods.

J-Man

Day 5:

Managed to be out for about 7 hours or so with nothing going. Sabaskong must be further along with fish as I could not find anything this trip. I flat out struggled.

Day 6:

Final day of fishing brought conditions that were better. Wind finally settled, so travel was easy. Went back to the east today and first spot finally managed to put a 32" into the boat. Clobbered an orange Bobbie right at boat side. Scared my wife as she was reading s book, and Surprised me as I didn't even see it.

After that, didn't raise another fish all day. Just not my year up here... Way it goes sometimes. On the road home tomorrow and will be looking forward to my own bed.

Good luck to those headed up in the bear future... My gut says be ready to work your butt off...

Fishing is tough on Sab as well. Especially when you get winds like we had starting Sat afternoon through Monday. Best fishing for us was farther east into the bay itself, down by Blueberry Island and some of that stretch.

Was up at tamarack lodge for 8 days. Left monday. Ya cold front slowed things but good fishing up to front. Pattern I found was timber and trees by reeds. And docks as well. Wife got 1st one 37.25 and second one 44.5 ever so she is hooked for life.. vertical hold was due to hook still in her hand at time but swam off strong. Tamarack made our experience great especially since wife had hook in thumb from 44 incher that she caught. 8 fish caught for week on topwater props, 7 inch big game, new orton topwater, and her 1st on a cjs spinnerbait. Great lodge and great hosts too. Cant wait to go back up again.

Here at the NW angle for 2 days of fishing. Fishing still isn't good. Fished hard, 11+ on day one and 12+ on day two with no fish boated. We had some follows 5-10 total and got hooks into 2 but each came off immediately. No pattern put together yet We still have 5 more days; we will see how things go. Looks like weather might turn things around soon. The water is warming still as well.
