Weighing all your variables....Speed, HoleShot, Sound, Gas efficiency, and Reliability, if you were going to buy a new 150hp new motor, which option would be your preference?

Seeing as Johnson no longer exists and were Suzuki motors anyway, I'd opt for the motor with the largest displacement. I'd be looking heavily at a honda as well..

The Merc Four Stroke 150 HP is amazing. Lots of low end torgue and scary fast. Merc also has a maintenance video on there web page that makes winterizing really easy.

I just bought a new Yamaha 150 this year so i'm glad to see all the votes for my new motor. I had a Suzuki 75 4 stroke prior for 14 years and it was an awesome motor.

Lots of great motors today, but I'd never go back to two stroke regardless of brand. Some manufacturers make a big deal about their two strokes not having all the hassle of maintenance, but it takes fifteen minutes to change the oil and another ten or fifteen to fog the cylinders. Thirty minutes a year is not a big price to pay for easy starting, not having to worry about oil, and NO STENCH.

My first choice was Yamaha, but when I bought my new boat a couple years ago, I got significant savings by going with Merc. No regrets. If you're going to be doing any trolling, Mercurys just can't be beat. Their Smartcraft system will control your engine idle by 50 rpm. increments. I can troll for salmon all day as slowly as 2.2 mph and never have to use a windsock.

BTW, Mercury is still made in the USA. Happy 4th of July!

Yamaha can dial down the Rpms also.

My opti starts with no hassle at all. Some boats perform better with a 2 stroke.

it's a little early but switching over to a Yamaha F150 this summer has been a dream to this point....not having to waste countless dollars and time picking up those oil jugs is just awesome, well worth the loss of a few miles per hour.

Yammy150 4, no brainer!!

Got one on a new Ranger in 2012 and she's wonderful.
Since 1989 I've had 3 Yammy's, a 1989 Pro-50, a 1997 115 HP 2 stroker and now this guy.

Never had one single issue with any of them. Not a one.

Hope ol' Murphy's not listinin'....

A Yammy is pretty hard to beat. Never have to even prime the gas line all season. Starts and runs perfectly everyday on the water. Happy purchasing.

I think most any of the newer motors out there are good. I vote Mercury, just because they are headquartered in home state of Wisconsin.

Interesting I asked the two mechanics that I know that work on these all day every day as professionals in a busy shop...and they surprised me when they said the Merc Optimax 150---with the Yamaha or Honda 4 strokes a very close second.....

What struck me was their absolute disdain for the Evinrude Etecs.....they were ranting in unison about how over rated they were---always in the shop...and hard to fix....really a passionate disregard for those things.....

Made me feel good as an Optimax 150 owner.........

I wouldn't own an etec but any of the other brands are good. I had a pro xs on my last boat and loved it. My current boat has a Suzy and I'm coming around to the 4 strokes growl. I would still say I prefer a 2 over a 4 though. You don't have to fog an opti at the end of the season. All I did with mine was put whatever stage merc gas additive they recommended for storage and run it into the motor. My rig does see the water more than most though and only sits idle for about 2 months a year.

96 Johnson V6 150 .
Right now it is my ONLY choice.

All of these shown above are really good choices though. That Merc is a beast.

My bets would be between the Yamaha and the Honda. I personally prefer the Honda's, but it can be tough to find a shop that is Honda certified. The 150 is actually the same motor as the 115 and 135 (which I have). The difference is it has VTEC.

Both are bulletproof as far as I'm concerned.

I never fog my 4 stroke. I wouldnt recommend it either. The amount of time these engines sit isnt long enough for them to corrode provided you change the oil immediately prior to storage AND do not run the engine afterward.
Run the motor, drain all fluids, replace fluids and filter. Put to bed.
Done this with my suzuki 150 since new and she purrrs like a kitten come March when I wake her up from her nap.

It's funny how many voted for Yamaha. It seems like just about every boat I see has a Merc on it, especially new boats. Even though I have a Mercury (it's a 99, and I'm pretty happy with it), I'd place my vote for Yamaha or Suzuki. I fished out of an 18' Lund tiller with a 90 Suzy with 3 guys and was impressed by the motor. Seemed to get up and going well, and was whisper quiet.

Never been in a boat with a Yamaha but any that I've seen on the water seem to be very smooth running motors, and I've read quite a bit about their excellent reliability.

Ran a Yamaha 150 4stroke 2008 for a few years and thought it was fine but it was a hard shift in and out of gear. I run a merc 150 4 stroke now and it's heads and toes better IMOP.

Grew up with dad, mom, three brothers and a neighbor kid packed into a 14' Alumacraft, powered by a 9.5 short shaft Evinrude. 60 hp. doesn't seem small to me! Just keep it well maintained, and it will do everything a new motor can.
