There's been a lot of discussion about how this year's cold winter may affect fishing. Those hoping for a cold and late spring are probably going to get their wish. Not sure what the Farmer's Almanac says, but I saw this update from the National Weather Service:

Looking forward to spring and warmer weather, although I made a lot of money hauling road salt in the Northeast this year :-)) and no stop in sight !

I just wish it would get warm enough that the lures would quit bouncing. No closed season here and I still haven't been on the water in over three months which is very rare this far south.

We get what we get for weather.
Can we do away with the farmers almanac? I have an old fart down the road from me and that is the only thing he talks about. All conversation starts with a hello and ends after the "almanac" has been fully discussed for the current time period. Two hours yesterday!

Almanac, moon phase, weather forecast, my neighbour's knee.
They're all decent predictors/guidelines to take into consideration when planning a trip or outing.
It could just be the volatility of this winter's weather here in MN but lately, I find myself subscribing more and more to one of George Carlin's theories regarding the planet.

flooding wide spred through spring, cold water temps till s. open, lots of high water into june for wis. river valley, poor early weed growth on the flowages and probably for the prime weed beds in the north woods. river fishing should be good.

The Black Bears here in NW. Pa. got the season of spring sensed well. Sunday on my way to work a twelve day run I saw the first Bear of the year, 200 yards from the house and then on I-80 off the road near Clearfield, Pa. I saw the second one. Had to call the girls to bring in the bird feeders.

When does the ice need to be off in Vilas for the musky to get their spawn in before the opener?

International Salt's stockpile in Baltimore is dwindling fast, I saw trucks from twelve different states loading. They have been getting a lot more snow than usual below the Mason-Dixon line. Four inches of snow is a big event and ice shuts them down. A lot of those states have a bare road policy for winter traffic operations and maintance. District 8 around Harrisburg, Pa. does also, however north of Perry County that changes.

The Lake Erie Ice Boom at the head of the Niagara River, holding back a nearly completely frozen Lake Erie, might get pulled by the first week of May this year, a full month late.Possitive side is Lake Erie water temprature will still be in the 50's for the 3rd Saturday in June Muskie Opener, should be excellent fishing with schools of baitfish still around. Also mean temprature of Lake Erie water will peak out at a lower degree and colder water will return early for great fall fishing!
Now I just need to get use to the snow that came down this morning, was 90 degrees in Guyana South America when I left there a few days ago!
