Was wondering if anyone knew if they made these in split grip as well as full handle? My Dad is interested in getting one and wanted to see his options.

Thanks!

Ok...that's what I figured but on their website there wasn't a spot to specify between the 2. I guess if we do order it would probably be best to just call.

Thanks!

Best thing to do is to call and ask for Lonnie, or Jason in the rod shop. Just figure out the spacing of how much of the blank you want showing on the handle for the split grip. Close your eyes and imagine what you want.....they can build it

Take a look at What Jeremy from Tuscarora Tackle can do for you on a Predator blank. He had some rods at the Milwaukee show that blew my mind. He is doing things I have never seen from any other rod builders. Great guy too.

And I did not see anybody talking about anything but... Just another option for somebody that can build on a Predator blank.

Winter is getting to be too long.

It is a Predator rod, just built by Tuscarora Tackle. Guy was asking about Predator rods. Options are always good to have.

Jeremy built that 9'3 XH predator for me and it was a work of art, I'd recommend Jeremy as well for a predator build option.

Is there a spot on Tuscarora Tackle where you can look at all the options? I see where you view each picture of the specific rod or do you have to contact him to talk about all the options? The rods on there are pretty sweet but couldn't see each possible combo.

Brett,

The rods on my website are examples of past builds and you can find a bunch more on my Facebook page. There are simply too many options out there for me to list them all. I don't make my customers pick from a certain number of options, I like them to be able to select whatever components they want for their rod- that's what makes it custom. You can either give me a call or shoot me an email to talk options. When I find out specifically what you are looking for, that will help me to guide you in the right direction as far as recommendations for the specifics of the build- blank, guides, grips, reel seat, etc.

Here's the link to my FB page:

Tuscarora builds usable art. Thorn bros builds very nice custom rods. For the money IMO you will like the Tuscarora rods.

My custom Green Tree Python Snake skin Legend Tournament built by Jeremy is a work of art and if I didn't like throwing glide and jerk baits so much it would be on display on my wall!! I also highly recommend him!!!

+1 for Thorne Bros Predator. When ordering my custom rods, I chose the builder with the proven track record—coincidentally the rod builder that helped engineer the blank.

There are rod builders and then there are custom rod builders, sounds like Jeremy is a custom rod builder. BR

I'm going to have my Dad check them all out before deciding. They all look like great rods and have numerous people backing them. Once he finds something he likes we will order.

Thanks for all the responses!

Make sure you check into their lead times. I ordered a Predator from Thorne Bros on December 30th and was told it would be 4-5 weeks. Called on January 31st and was told it would be another 2 weeks. Still haven’t heard anything. I’m not in a rush since I obviously can’t use it right now, but I appreciate it when people stick to the time table they gave me.

Thorne is notoriously busy this time of the year. (Lots of custom Ice work on top of the regular stuff.) I do all my building in the offseason and I basically tell them I want it before opener. I've yet to have a rod be late.

I would strongly encourage you to have your Dad call Lonnie and get some time with him at least on the phone if in person is not possible. There are a world of options and it helps to understand how you want to fish and what you want to do with the rod. From there you can set up the right build.

As an aside, I would strongly reccomend paying the extra cost for the Titanium Guides. They make a noticeable difference in the final weight of a rod which really pays off over a long day of casting. Also depending on how you like to grip the rod/reel I'd consider using the new "palming" reel seat from Fuji which St. Croix is using on it's LT rods. (this one doens't cost extra!) I did my last custom with these mods and I was tremendously pleased with the results.

Thorne brother and Lonnie is the smart choice, he stand behind his rods, they were a big part of developing this blank. In the past years seen many builders come and go, and thorne is still the standard that all other are judged. You will love the predator.

As long as this thread has turned into a who's who of rod building i'd like to send a shout out to a coupla builders that live only minutes away from Thornes and are part of the tight-knit rod building community here in MN.

Randy Thompson - aka "randy t" on the boards here is a custom bait maker and impeccable rod builder with an extensive multi-species/saltwater fishing background.

Gary Wick - Custom rod builder of 32 years, also offering both rod & reel repair services.
These guys have solid connections with the staff at Thornes and can build on the St. Croix made predator blanks as well.
Gary also offers rod blanks that were made to his specifications and is a supplier of rod building materials and components. He offers classes on rod building too.

Options are a wonderful thing. I have some of Jeremy's rods and they are fantastic, he is easy to work with and stands behind his builds. I have a thorne bros and it is fantastic. Had great experiences with both. The more quality options, the better off we all are.

The "Predator" rod is very exclusive rod. Lonnie, who is the head rod builder and has been there for many many years helped design this awesome blank. In my opinion, it is the best Muskie blank out there, weather you go with the H, XH, or XXH. Other smaller guys or companies buy the blanks from Lonnie at Thorne Brothers. Most "custom" rod builders actually will buy the blank from Lonnie at Thorne Brothers and then build on top of it. There is a reason that the Thorne Brothers Predators series is so popular amongst the top of the line Muskie fisherman all the way down to the guy who is just getting into the awesome sport. Its a blank that has extreme performance and I would put it next to any Muskie blank out there right now.
Lonnie's craftsmanship is second to none. He has been doing amazing designing, inventing, and implementing some of the best rods in the industry. The amount of different options you can get with a Thorne Brother custom rod is second to none. I would highly recommend to just go the top of the game and give Lonnie a call.
Shoot me a PM if you want some more info, wont try to "sell" you on anything, just will give you a avid Muskie Fisherman's opinion.

Lots of marketing and fanboys in these threads for sure:-) Popular doesn't make it better, do yourself a favor if you can and actually look at different builders rods, see if they form their own cork and don't order the cork handles out, see if the guides are on spine. Look at the craftsmanship of the build. It is a personal thing, typically a costly investment so take the time see them in person if possible. Also look at different blanks, no reason to limit yourself. BR

You can get a Chevy Suburban with aftermarket rims, pinstripes and ground effects or you can drive your Cadillac Escalade home from the rod shop and start crushing muskies with it.
