Just wondering...If there were no muskies which freshwater game fish would make you troll, cast and daydream about for hours? I know there is no other fish that compares but what if there was none......

Hi Jamie, I would fish Northerns. I''ve been fishing for about 35 years and before I started fishing for muskies, my favorite was always Northerns. 2nd choice would maybe be those ''cudas like the ones in the pictures you sent me.

Cheers,
Chris

that is a tough question! hmm... i used to love pike- but they have been a little pesky to me this summer, hitting my muskie lures and all- i think we aren't getting along like we used to... so i think my next fav after that might be lakers(not the cheerleaders- although those are good too[] )

J,for me it would be smaller fish with teeth! WALLEYES,they are also a think`in mans fish and good eat`in too! [:0] I like smallie fishing but they pose less of a challange then walleyes. Also eyes are open year-round here and can chase them early and late season! [:halo:] Jeff

J-- try a sea-run striper sometime! Landlocked striper will also give a good fight + are fun to fish for w/ planer boards/long-lining, casting bucktails or throwing redfins/thundersticks at night. I have found that they will also knock the pee-dinkles out of a 4" or 6" Hawg wobbler. Sutton spoons will catch them when even gizzard shad won't. Since we have fewer musky around this part of the country I have little choice! Living w/in comfortable driving distance from the Chesapeake Bay/Outer Banks also helps round out other types of angling for large powerful fish. In fact, if you guys ever head south give me a buzz! Sold my Carolina Skiff but know some good surf areas. Of course food is a major part of any trip + there is NO lack of good places![:sun:]

Rik , I have not fished for stripers but would like to try one day. If there was no ' Skis I would fish for Pike and Walleyes and catchfish. Those channel cats put up a good fight on light line. In the ocean Cudas are alot of fun but sharks get my nod.....

Smallmouth bass, hands down. In fact, I've been known to blow off muskies and go smallie fishing on more than one occasion. More than a hundred years ago smallies were described as 'inch for inch and pound for pound, the gamest fish that swims.' Hard to argue...

Well, I have chased largemouths the most in my life so I would have stuck with them. I still fish for them during the week. There really is not a pike fishing worth going for by me or much for great walleye fishing.

J, went this evening + saw some stripers busting shad off a shelf/flat but couldn't reach them from the bank. The lake closes at 10:00 + is EXTREMELY clear so by the time they start heading to shore I have to head home. They put a 9.9 horse power limit this year on it + I bought a small rig to fish there but got a late start. Fished some weedbeds but the water is WARM + nothing doing.....[:((]

Rk,

I agree with you. If smallmouths grew to be 40 pounds I would be a bass fisherman. Smallmouths have given me many a battle and are a worthy gamefish
How are you making out this season....

Pike and Bass, Largemouth first, then smallmouth. I cut my fishing teeth on Largemouth, and fish them every week when at the Tuffy Factory in Lake Mills, on Rock Lake. Love to fish creatures on the deep weedline, and feel that 'thumP'a 20" bigmouth makes when taking a creature...

If for some horrible reason, I was unable to fish Muskies, I would be chasing Smallmouth.
I always thought that a Smallmouth is just a Muskie trapped in a Bass' body.

I would probably spend most of my time fishing for for largemouths, but if we had more around here, I'd be after lake trout. Talk about something that hits a ton. Things get massive too. If we had 40lbers here I would definitely split time with muskies for them. Later

I have to agree with the Handyman on this one. Walleyes would get my nod. Next to ski's they are the toughest fish to catch on a consistent basis. Especially during the day and on clear waters. They frequently put you to the test of finding them, not to mention getting them to bite.

Hey guy's the cyber sewer must still be sucking them in. Second post!

Just say it's not so; no more Muskies! I'm just getting cranked up!

If they all died- Northerns, Smallies, "big eye's", largemouth (at night)in that order. But I think Sponge Bob has something there w/ the sea-run stripers-just moved back to WI from Rhode Island. Those puppy's will smoke a drag! If ya get a chance take SB up on the offer- great fun - plus you'll be in serious seafood country!!!![]

It's your choice!

Smallmouths without a doubt... If I could catch 50" Smallmouths, I would stop fishing muskies all together.[:sun:]

Probably Northerns, and smallies. . No muskies though....hummm. Thats hard to picture. I guess if I didnt have anything like a muskie to fish for I would more than likely end up next to I-94 trying to snag VW's wizzing by. I just cant picture no muskie fishing, I guess it would be like life without a penis.

I would probably fish for Walleye most of the time if there were no more Muskies. But then again I could move to Guyana,South America and fish for Equator Muskies,Arapima(head like a Musky with a fin like and eel, gets to 600 lbs and jumps and takes Monkey's out of tree branches for dinner).Take Clients there in March every year now, also good for Catfish that get to 500 lbs and look like stealth bombers.Leaping Piaria with two sabre teeth, jump a lot for a average 10 lb. fish as well. It's great when your relitives own a 10 mile square cattle ranch in Guyana on the bordor with Brasil and the headwaters of the Amazon River flow by.Ok enough,no one's going to take Muskies away from me,I'm just going to keep putting them back and watch them get BIGGER! Wow....anyone else notice the decided east/midwest bias here??? Is there no one else out there west of the Mississippi??? It is so hard being a Montana Musky enthusiast.

Love fishing salmon guys...especially sockeye. They are the smallmouth of the salmon world. If they got 50 lbs. like king salmon you'd never get one in. Already do a lot of trout fishing. BUT I must admit going after pike and walleye are a big kick.

If I couldn't fish for Muskies I would move to Florida and fish for Tarpon. The way they fight puts muskies to shame. I caught a 'little' 30 pounder in March that jumped next to the boat and was above my head. Sight fishing for them on the flats is unreal. If not Tarpon then I would fish for smallies. Or maybe trout like Doc mentioned before me.

..I hear you on the Tarpon thing. I went out in Keywest for the but it was too cold. There were soem beside the dock that we could feed by hand. They are quite an impressive fish. I will have to go bacck and try it. I watched a guy on a fort lauderdale pier fight one for 45 minutes only to have it wrap itself around a piling and break off. MAn do they ever pull drag....

For me, there are no other freshwater game fish to make me cast troll and daydream about but I would really enjoy fishing Smallies as a replacement. I might argue for Northerns but there are no decent Pike fisheries in my area that produce 34"+ fish consistently that I know of. Smallies are the pound for pound contenders and I enjoy every minute of the few Smallie excursions I take each year. I like Walleyes too but wouldn''t want to make them the focus of my attention.

A DISTANT 2nd to the King of Freshwater in my book would actually be stream trout- browns, bows, brooks on the fly. Polar opposites in technique and species and everything, but similar in the challenge. I love to flyfish, but musky is what I am!

J, Closer than Fl....! Certain times of the year you can catch some humongo tarp here in Va. in a MOST unlikely place. Wifes'' cousin was telling me about this last mo. + says virtually no one fishes them in this area. Of course Fl. has more "vacation" appeal but being only 4 hrs. from here makes it an easy trip to set up. He failed to tell me WHERE exactly but I think I can find out...[;)]

Sponge Bob,

VA is on the way to Florida from my place (Ottawa). My girlfriends parents live in Lauderdale and the pier is down the street. Great fishing a block away. You have the best of both worlds Musky fishing with a close ride to the sea. Have you ever fished for sharks? I like them alot. Catch and release as well.

This post started out with the premise that the fish had to be fresh water, however that seems to have made a turn to
saltwater.
Wreck fishing with cut bait is a real trip, with a combination of catching fish that you can actually eat (imagine that!) and the possibility of hooking into anumber of big toothy creatures as well, gave me quite a test on my muskie tackle. A 45" barracuda that I caught in 110' of water showed me that if it was tied tail to tail with a 45" muskie, the muskie would be swimming backwards for a long time!

..Steve,

yes tthis water has gotted a little salty. I caught a monster cuda 51" in Key west what a fight. 20 lb test on musky tackle. Did you notice that cudas smell exactly the same as a musky. I found it quite odd but savored the moment...and the smell 3000 miles from home

check out the pic of my cuda at www.greatfishing.net
take care
