Posts: 294 | I've been using 8'6" rods for a while now and it's time to upgrade for the upcoming season. The rods I am looking at are offered in 9' and wanted to get everyone's thoughts on 9 footers. Is there that much of a difference than the 8'6's? Is there really any reason to go to the 9'?

Posts: 1000 | 6% deeper on your figure 8's, Whatever the partial circumference increase while picking up slack. Longer casts. Better hooksets. Given how similar the prices are, if you can fit the rods in your boat/car the question is "why not?"

Posts: 351 Location: Vilas County, WI | 9' is too long for me. Just personal preference. I found that my figure 8's and bait control ended up worse with a 9 footer. I have one 8'6" and two 8'.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | I am 5'10" with shoes.... Used 7 and 7'6" rods for years and moved to a 9' rod and never thought I would like it but still tried it. Its now hard for me to use anything under an 8'6" and I prefer the 9' rods. You can really cast a lot better IMO with a 9' rod. I am seriously thinking about making myself a 9'6" and 10' telescopic rods just because I like 9' rods so much. With that said, I use mostly my TI rods and these have 18" handles on them so from the reel seat up compared to a SC with 16" handle or most other rods with shorter handles my TI 9' rods fish more like 8'10" to 8'8" rods for casting but for fig 8s they still fish like a 9' rod as you can grab the butt end and really get your lure in a big fig 8. Your best bet is to go fish with a buddy who has a 9' and use it for an hour and see what you think. James

Posts: 1251 Location: E. Tenn | Currently use 8'6", the only thing preventing me from using anything longer is storage/transport.. Now that TI has two piece 9', that's no longer a concern.

Posts: 294 | James, I'm actually looking at your telescopic 9'ers for the two I want to pick up. I wish I could fish one first but no one I fish with has come into this century and has anything even over 8'. I'm pretty sure this is the way I'm going. Thanks for the input guys!

Posts: 340 Location: Lake County Illinois | I have several Okuma Telescopic rods, but my 2 favorites are the 8'6''XH and the 9'3''XH. I do like the extra length on the 9'3'',but still use the 8'6'' quite a lot for small to medium baits as the tip is a bit softer even though they are both XH.

Hey Ray, I'm curious what those 9'3" Tele Okuma rods break down to and if they offer a full grip back handle or just split grip? Thanks I love my TI 9' rods. I could never imagine throwing bucktails, spinnerbaits, crank baits, rubber without them. It makes doing figure 8s and casting a breeze.

Posts: 340 Location: Lake County Illinois | brian T, I believe they are now only offered in a split grip, and the 9'3'' goes down to about 7'6''.

Posts: 865 | The Okuma 9'3 XHvy Telescoping Split Grip rod is a nice light rod in weight, But it is has a much softer Tip than what you would expect in a Xhvy Rod. "To me" this rod fishes and feels like a Med/Hvy to Heavy Rod...Nothing Xtra Heavy about this rod. I broke mine 2nd Day using it throwing a MagDawg It was under warranty so I had it Replaced and sold the replacement rod.I then Purchased a Tackle Industries 9' Telescopic XHy This looks to be what I was Originally looking for and it has a Full Cork Or Split Grip Options....This seems to be a Great looking Rod, and I have had Many great reviews on these Rods. I Would say this seems to be the Best 9' XHy Telescopic Musky Rod out there with a great Customer Service and even Better Price Range..Great Rod James Keep up the Good Work. Posts: 294 | I currently own the 8'6 Okuma I. Both the xh and xxh. Both have that "soft tip" that cast4 is talking about. They are nice rods but it is very uncomfortable throwing anything large. I am excited to try the TI rods this year. I was able to look at them in person at my local shop the other day and they have a much better feeling tip. Plus the extra guides will help too.

Location: Canada | muskyrat - 2/6/2014 5:48 PM big time -- people who havent had to net their own fish with a 86 or 9' rod dont know wht they're missing. I think majority of musky guys who are 110% pro long and even longer rods are netting each others fish and dont have a clue about this issue. Good for them but yeah singlehandedly getting a Big Nasty fish into a frabill big game bag is an extreme sport LOLI have just gotten used to using an 8' foot rod. Does anybody have problems netting big fish alone with those long rods?

Posts: 31 Location: Southern Illinois | I own seven TI 9' telescoping rods. Can't say enough good things about them. Great rods, great price, great customer service, ect.. Started Muskie fishing with 8' rods. Made the switch after throwing one that my buddy had and never looked back.

Posts: 139 | i have a few of each, 8', 8'3", 9' and always go back to the 8'3" or 8'.. i think 8'3" is perfect. I just don't care for the 9' rods. They may fish well, but they are PITA to get around. I just don't see the need.
