Been ridiculous this winter. Figures my first winter back is arctic. Made decent ice, at least around here.

I haven't found much ice that I really like yet. But I figure most places should be good after this weekend's arctic air mass arrives.

The bite is slowing, but we've got great ice on Pelican in Grant Co. If you ever want to make the drive, I've got use of a house.

Have heard the slush is bad most other places though.

I hit -40 yesterday am between Warroad and Lake of the Woods at Rocky Point. Was a bit warmer on Lake at -37. Sled wouldn't start, took 20 minutes to get auger started. Fishing was soso... Balmy +12 today though.

ice conditions in northern wisconsin are fantastic but without a slow-down on the deep freeze we'll have some problems with freeze-out on some lakes with a winter kill.

fishing up to the last cold snap was incredible with some pigs hitting the ice and then it shut down. hoping tonight and tomorrow's warm-up will open a window again before it all slams shut on Sunday-Monday.

a couple of the gooder ones we caught … there were a few more bigguns that came through the hole for a photo op too. ;0)

be sure to join the discussions on icefishingfirst.com … small group but lots of quality topics and information shared in there.

Jon those are some pigs! Long northerns and what a build on that walleye!

We're at 5 above in Hayward right now but 15-25mph wind. Started at -5 at 6:00 this morning. I had back to back -30 on my way to work each side of New Years.

I haven't been out but this wind is going to be brutal. I'd much rather have -25 and calm than +15 and howling.

The ice is ok in the Hayward area. The bigger deep lakes are doing quite well on ice at about 15 solid, dry inches. They had almost 0 ice when we got 2 days of heavy snow, and what ice there was must have melted. The lakes that had 3-5 inches just prior to the big snow have been full of slush for a couple weeks now. Got my ATV stuck on one and if there hadn't been 2 of us I'm not sure how I'd have made it out of that mess. I imagine with these 2 cold snaps the slush should be firming up at least enough for an ATV to stay on top of it, but there's going to be about 8 inches of slush/junk ice on top of the good stuff all year on some lakes.
