Posts: 55 Location: Arena WI | 2 people fishing on the front deck side by side. Fisherman 1 has a very hot fish coming on a surface lure, starts to do a figure 8 and all he can get is a L turn because #2 slaps his lure in the water and brings it toward the fish. It slams his lure and he gets the big fish and happy picture. This was not a tourny where you are going for points. How much time would you give fisherman #1 and what would you do and say after this. I feel I have a right to be unhappy but I would really like some opinions.

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | If my boat partner has a follow I stop retrieving so I don't spook his fish. I'd probably have to apologize for pushing partner 2 in the lake if I was partner 1.

With certain friends, we'd do that to each other just for laughs (unless it was a really big fish) Generally speaking, though? That sort of behavior will get you thrown overboard.

Posts: 532 | I know guys who make musky fishing so competive that it no longer is fun. Don't make it that way. Generally we r in my boat 95% of the time, If I have a follow that goes in an 8 I tell the guy fishing with me to start figure 8ing as well. I would rather see my friend get a fish on a figure 8 than to have a fish dart away and no one gets it. Those fish you boat when you and your fishing buddy get when working together are so much more rewarding, and the stories you get from it are the best to tell, because there are two story tellers. Like BenR said, its just a fish.

| I want to see anyone catch a fish. In fact, I'm usually happier when someone else catches it. | |||

Posts: 2026 | I'm personally done with figure 8's. I am rigging a cattle prod type device to the top of my rod so I can electroshock them as they follow in.

Posts: 415 | You should be happy you played a vital role in a buddy catching a nice fish. If it upset you then you should have brought it up with him then and there.

Posts: 2389 Location: Chisholm, MN | I'd be bummed. I stop my bait if someone has a follow so they can catch it. I also believe that if 2 people are figure 8ing the same fish, it becomes confused or distracted and nobody catches it.....sometimes.

Posts: 20281 Location: oswego, il | What he did wasn't cool and you should have had a talk with him about it. It does not matter who's boat it was. Nobody I fish has ever done that. He got lucky, could have just.spooked the fish off. Have the talk and go on from there. Like Sled said the boat is a happy place. Edited by ToddM 10/7/2013 8:03 PM

| Get a new partner quick......You will have more issues down the road with a person like that. I would consider this fish stolen from you. Wrote one off like that several years ago. Mudpuppy | |||

Posts: 55 Location: Arena WI | I was #1 in my boat. What I did not like was that I could not do a 8 because of him. After I put it in the net he said sorry but I had to do it! I said congrats but don"t expect a High-5. I have always enjoyed people catching fish in my boat and around 25-30 people have caught their first in it! I have over 150 to count and this would have been in the top 10 if not top 5. The reason I posted this is to see if what I said was OK or if I was over reacting to the situation. He has been fishing with me for years and is the only one I have issues with, which others will agree with. I just keep trying to help make him a better fisherman, but I think the time has ended. I haven't told him this yet. So steve don't think I haven't tried and I feel bad about your comment!

Posts: 532 | Must have been some fish (one that wasnt guaranteed you would catch) to end a friendship you kept for a few years. But who am I to say anything because this was the first issue you had with the guy.

Posts: 1220 | In several sort of similar threads I have always maintained the fish is the boat's fish, team fish, and I urge my boat mates to drive their baits into the drink quickly if a following fish does not make the purchase. If this thing actually happpened, however, exactly as you describe it...I think it's OK to push the guy overboard!

Posts: 1023 | He crossed the line big time. If he snapped for a second and he is not that type of person then he needs to be warned. If this is typical of his nature then find a new fishing partner. Muskie fishing is a team game. That was not a team move.

Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Your.boat, your.ground rules apply. Those rules could go either way.No.matter what you're fishing for ettiquette in your boat should always beclear and understood. In my boat out.it's different with different peopleas well as fishing different species. doesn't necessarily haveto be laid out as "ground rules" butrather communication between all anglers within the same boat. Posts: 458 | It is about communication. We discuss this up front and if I have a fish in the 8 my partner brings in his bait, does not move to spook the fish and when I say it is good to cast back or throw then that is what he will do. It is defintely a team sport and it takes the team to catch a fish but the guy with the hot fish deserves the best chance. I was at Eagle Lake fishing with Cal and I had a good fish follow and I figured 8 and the fish bolted away. Stupidly, I stopped my figure 8"s and proceeded to have a tantrum. My buddy literally droppped a double 10 in the water and as it helicoptered down the fish ate it. It was a 48" fish and his new PB. I have to admit that I was peeed and there was about an hour of awkward silence (I did hear Cal giggle on occasion) but this was 100% my fault. You need to clearly communicate with your partner and don't forget...it is just a fish and good friends are hard to find. Edited by edalz 10/10/2013 10:34 AM

Location: Contrarian Island | reminds me of the Red Fin video where the 2 guys from Sweden or Denmark are on the front deck and the one guy has a big one follow and it hits the other guys lure on the 8 while they both were figure 8'ing... "unta, unta, unta, you stole my fish" says the one guy... classic look on his face!

He can teach you more in one day than any other guide that I have hired. I spoke with him a couple of weeks ago and he is doing well. I just wish Eagle wasn't a 22 hour drive one way...

Posts: 55 | This story is hilarious! If you are in the boat with good friends then it never seems to matter who catches the fish as long as someone gets it....Its just fishing and stories like that last a lifetime.

Posts: 38 | Plunking his bait in right beside you and getting in the way of your 8 was a bonehead move and your right to let him know it. That being said if its the first time you've had a problem with him I wouldn't ban him from the boat. He probably feels like a bit of a "Richard" for doing it and is hopefully unlikely to do it again. Personally in my boat I don't mind if others 8 when I have a follow, but expect that they do it from the other side of the boat or the back, just stay out of my way. When fishing with someone and the ground rules have not been established, if they get a follow I keep my rod out of the water until they pull their bait out or tell me to get the 8 going.
