Memorial Day is a time to remember the men (and women) who gave their lives in the service of their country from Bunker Hills to Kandahar. We may spend it on the water, but let's not forget what it means.

Aren't we all "tourists" in this life?
Think about that for a while.

I love it when the tourists come to town. Now if they'd only leave the attitude back in the city where it belongs...

Let's see, I'm going to spend about $700 not including a new battery at the local hardware store up North, release every single fish we hopefully catch. This includes tipping the waitresses, bartenders at the local gin mills. We’re buying landscaping materials, 2 new life jackets, a new America Flag, and groceries at another local store. Then we cut a check to Shoerder’s in Rhinelander for Pontoon repairs. I would hope that this helps the local economy and promote good will to the flatlanders that choose to travel to these areas and spend their hard earned money.

Have a safe holiday everyone!

Can't we just all get along out on the water? Whether your from WI, IL or somewhere else, the lakes are all of ours...except for the one I happen to be fishing, that one is MINE!

My favorite quote from a fellow FIB, after some of the local patrons were complaining about the smell of his cigar:

"This is the Northwoods. I have a RIGHT!!"

Mm Hm. If you don't put out that friggin DOG TURD, you're liable to earn yourself a few lefts to go with it...

happens everywhere, fair weather boaters, DNR swarming the lake giving tickets, and patsies taking sponge baths while their kayak sits blocking the ramp. one time I shouted out to the crowd - nobody in particular -'where were you guys when the water was 39 degrees!?'... 'yeah that's what I thought!'

I remember one year when I was a kid, when the local lake was getting a little too crowded... The DNR and the local police department decided to go on a rampage, stopping boat after boat after boat, writing tickets for everything they could think of. No life jackets, no lights, no fire extinguishers, over limit, you name it. If your boat was registered in IL, you got a ticket for SOMETHING. If you had a Jet Ski, it was a guarantee you'd get stopped and likely get a ticket. The next season? The lake was EMPTY. The guys who owned the marina went from over 100 boat slips rented and three full piers to one pier that was half full, that they didn't even install the last 50 feet of. At the time, everyone I knew (all FIBS) was good guying about the stupid DNR and the small town cops, and what a bunch of nice guys they all were, and what BS it was that so-and-so got a ticket for this or that... Many folks got so mad they swore never to come back again. Today, that lake is just as much of a circus as it always was, perhaps moreso. But there were a few quiet years after that... That's when I learned to appreciate quiet.
