I'm really getting the itch and june 1rst can't come soon enough. Just something to talk about here- What are everyones favorite lures early in the season? I personally will be throwing phantoms and cowgirls around the thickest weeds /I can find. Or pacemakers over shallow sand. Anyone else care to share muskie opener strategies and lures?

Posts: 32 | Im with crix. I made about a dozen of my own cowgirls this winter so I will be casting and figure eighting each to check my work first. Then i will throw the dozen or so other baits I bought this winter. Only then can I seriously fish.

Posts: 1916 Location: Greenfield, WI | My opening day rods are rigged with a 6" Slammer Crankbait, a Slammer dropbelly glider, and a Doghouse Bucktail. It is tradition and they work for me.

Posts: 833 | At this point I have no idea, it depends on the conditions of the day and where we end up water temp wise. At the rate this "spring" is progessing we might have metro temps south of 60 degrees on June 1st.

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | Like noted several times already it depends on what mother nature throws at us. Usually bucktails and topwater. Might be phantoms, suicks, and dawgs.

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | My wife and I always start with Cranes and our Talonz Little Claws. This year we have a new addition to our lure lines being tested for adding them into our regular lineup. The Talonz P.M.S. which stands for Pro Musky Series. Similar to a 7 inch Crane but built from ultra light Eastern White Cedar. Real nice kick out action on the first prototypes. Our opener is earlier then Wisconsin and Minnesota so we are fishing colder water. 27th of April this year and weather patterns are keeping water cold so far. W e may actually have pre spawn fish all over Michigan this year. W e also use smaller bucktails early and regular size dawgs. But Little Claw twitchers will get most of our time.

Posts: 3885 | Assuming you are talking about daylight on the opener, Mepps or Buckertails at any inlets. Mepps are smaller but Buckers are slower. Ghosttails are the medium, I suppose. Key is to know the fish are there, the two close corners at the inlet are gold. Sneak up and drag the baits off shore into the water without the fish knowing you are around. Once those spots are spooked move to the warmest side of the lake and and drag hair off the sand into the water. All sneaky all the time, the fish have had no pressure for months. Once the easy fish are shot move out deeper and use a suspendo crank twitched back to the boat, ever so slow, plus seriously drag a sucker 6' down at boatside to potentially pick up lazy follows. If #*#* is really slow then back off and toss jig/creatures tipped with 4-5" suckers off the drops, or just jig them straight down watching your finder and how the fish are reacting. If your opener starts at midnight, like back in my crazy days, it was always a black/silver Buchertail casted to shore and pulled back at the surface. Always quiet and sneaky, not one sloppy cast ever. Very quiet. I left the inlets alone till daylight when I could see what I was doing.

Personally I like jimjimjim's Single bladed #12 Fluted Magnum Blade (nickle) with a black or gold tinsel tail and an 8/0 treble work all year long regardless of the water temps. I think its because of the big thump the single blade puts out and they have a moderate length/profile
