Posts: 427 | I have been chasing muskie for the last couple of years and have to drive over an hour to get to the closest muskie waters. I have had a decent first couple of years considering how little I actually get to chase them. My question is how many actually keep track of how many fish they catch? I talked to a guy at the Chicago show and he could not believe that I did not know how many fish I had caught. I am guessing I have caught somewhere between 25 and 35 with my biggest being 48 with several 45 and over. So if you have a lifetime # what is it?

LOL I was just gonna say this. I normally kinda keep track for the first couple months of season and then I just lose interest. This season I didn't even count at all from day one. But I know guys who know more about my fish than I do. That's also the reason this was the first season I kept most of what I actually caught to myself. I'm fine with people thinking I'm a horrible fisherman...much less stress and pressure that way.

Posts: 2015 | I keep track of my catches (36"+) along with quite a bit of info of the catch because I believe it makes me a better angler, every year is different but its amazing how year over year and month over month, stats lead to consistencies ESPECIALLY water temps and wind direction (get the same wind for three + days on some lake and I can guarantee fish) good data leads to confidence - high confidence usually leads to fish in the net. Putting the pieces of the puzzle together is a big part of what I enjoy.

It doesn't matter whether you've caught 1 or 1001----as long as you have enjoyed the "journey". THAT'S what musky fishing is ALL ABOUT. The EXPERIENCE ----the CHASE----the HUNT-----THE WINS------the LOSSES-------the CALM DAYS----and the WHITECAPS. I'm sure the people who have one fish enjoyed that fish just as much as the people who caught their 1000th. We're all together in our sickness. Personally caught my 400th last August on Rowan at Nielsen's------caught a bunch since then on LSC-----gotta love it!!! Catch a bunch! ----John

Posts: 8781 | I've kept track of most. Now that I am down to fishing one week a year if I am lucky, it's not even worth the effort. The only one that matters is the next one.

Posts: 20218 Location: oswego, il | I keep track of my numbers. Maybe someday I wont but for me it keeps me driving for more fish, a personal goal. I dont compete with others or keep track of their catch numbers but I like to strive as best I can to have my best year.

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | I keep track of my yearly numbers to compare to previous seasons, which in turn means I have kept track of total numbers. Comparing days on the water, time spend during those days, weather conditions fished, water conditions fished ect.... where I was one year as compared to the next. Then I take my previous season and set a goal for my upcoming season. I now I have my goal in place for this coming season, can't wait to fix my arm and start casting Edited by FAT-SKI 2/6/2013 4:35 PM

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | Wait... people set goals for numbers of fish? Why? So if you reach your goal you're successful? What if you don't reach your goal? Does that make you a failure? Will you sacrifice your enjoyment to reach your goals? My goal is to catch a fish every cast and have fun every outing. No more no less. Otherwise what are we even doing out there? Does that make you a failure? Will you sacrifice your enjoyment to reach your goals? My goal is to catch a fish every cast and have fun every outing. No more no less. Otherwise what are we even doing out there? Well yeah! I set a goal to beat my previous year in numbers and size. I've accomplished that goal for the last three years. If I don't make the goal....way she goes. But, I am shooting high for next year. If I don't make it, I just need to get better. Not a failure and I enjoy trying to meet the goal. Thats part of it for me. A lot of people just enjoy being on the water and putting in an effort, which is totally fine. Personally, I enjoy fishing hard and working to meet the goal.

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | I keep track of every catch and the details that go along with them no matter how big or small. You would be suprised how they compare from year to year. I've goten some of my best days within a day or two every year. Also we started tagging with our local muskies inc. Wich makes it even more fun and you get to see if they are recaptures or not. Not everyone will lie about there numbers some years are good some aren't. I also take a photo of nearly everyone and it has helped to identify recaptures before I was tagging. It's about the fun and the challenge so I think goals are a good thing and gives you something to keep going and work at. If you don't make your goal it may make you look at your aproach different and encourage you to try something new. Russ

I always wanted to start a log with all conditions and factors on each outing on the water. It's been years and I haven't started, I am terrible at keeping track and over my entire span of musky fishing I have no clue how many I've caught, how many I've seen, though I know I've gone 0 for 0 many many many times. Crappy memory. Same goes with aces in disc golf, stupid memory.

Posts: 150 Location: Central Minnesota | I don't think there is anything wrong with setting goals. For me it make me strive to be better and I think all of us are trying to better ourselves. I don't get down on myself if I don't reach my goal, I use it as a learning experience. I also set other goals like learning a new body of water, finding new spots, improving my boat control, working my baits more effectively. All these things make me a better fisherman. Most importantly, I strive to enjoy myself every time I go out.

Know a lot of guys who would fish where they weren't enjoying themselves or experiencing anything new just to get a number.

Some people are just goal-oriented people, some people are into statistics and numbers. It doesn't always mean they are competing with anyone or trying to prove anything. Just different ways of going about the same task.

Posts: 20218 Location: oswego, il | I am happy for others when they catch fish. Happy to net a fish for my boat partner. Nothing wrong with setting a goal. I fish for muskies to catch them. I enjoy fishing and spending time with my family and friends fishing. For me that means making good decisions and give myself the best opportunity to catch fish. I live in illinois and pretty much fish weekends. I am bound to seasonal weather patterns for my success and the fish that this area produces for size. If I feel I am wasting my time musky fishing, I will fish for something else untill I feel it's worth my time. I don't care to chase cold bites anymore. Edited by ToddM 2/6/2013 8:16 PM

Posts: 399 Location: WI | Every Muskies Inc member has access to the Lunge Log Records of over 300,000 musky catches. I use this to keep track of the muskies I've caught, and to research various waters I plan to fish. It helps you put together a "game plan" before ever seeing a new lake. Just another benefit on being a Muskies Inc member.

Every year I keep telling myself that I was going to keep better track but end up slacking off. I started this season keeping good track & writing down the time the fish was caught, its length, moon phase etc. but after the first couple of weeks I got lazy plus I had a span of almost 3 months that I didn't fish.

Another day on "As the muskyworld turns". I've never said how many fish I catch. Don't Care I do have an opinion about what happens on V and try to help others out since I've been fishing here for the last 15 yrs. and I talk about Tournaments a bit.......People who "Know" me, usually like me...... Location: The Yahara Chain | I like to crunch my data for the same reasons as IA justin. Before I joined MI I counted all legal fish, which was everything 34" and larger at the time. MI tracks everything 30" and larger so it just became easier to count everything 30" or larger after joining MI. I look at as I am competing against the fish, not against any other anglers. I am happy for all of my friends when they have success. 476 for me so far Hoosier Hunter.

Posts: 1023 | I used to fish great numbers waters in ontario. I boated 100 in a summer when I first started out and thought I was the man. I soon found out how humbling musky fishing can be. Now I could care less about numbers. Don't get me wrong. I love catchin fish but now I really just crave big ones. It doesn't have to be 50" to make me happy though. I love the big fat fall fish and I love to cast for them. Landry

I stayed in a cabin at a Spring Bay Muskies 1st outing with Mr.Top H20, and I DID like him, very nice, very helpful. I think he was more worried about us catching fish, than his fish count. Thanks for the help Mr. H2O !

Posts: 833 | I keep track of my numbers. I use it to gauge where I'm at and what I can work on. I also like to set a yearly catch goal that is ambitious, because it forces me to get better overall. If somebody catches more than me, I don't get jealous, I just try to learn from them. Heck, I learn stuff from guys who catch fewer than me. Half the fun of this sport is the variety of ways you can put fish in the net if you are willing to figure it out. Edited by Brad P 2/6/2013 11:06 PM
